Metal shavings on oil dip stick

I have a 2017 V6 automatic with 70k miles. I noticed metal shavings on the oil dip stick this morning. Checked it three more times and still more shavings. I haven’t noticed shavings in past oil changes. I would expect this on the truck’s first oil change, but question it at this point. Any thoughts?

 

That's not good. Do you have a pic?
Maybe drain the oil and send to a lab? If you can see and feel actual shavings,,, might be too late.

Thought I read this before where some people said the dipstick tip is sharp and could be scratching the dipstick tube on the way down.. could check again and try to be more careful with the dipstick?

Change your oil and inspect the filter media, to rule this out.

 

Yes sir, you need to figure this out right away.
I would pull the filter and examine it.
Run a clean neodymium magnet over it, wrapped inside a clean glove.
I would drain the oil thru a cooking screen sieve, with neodymium magnet again wrapped inside a glove.
If you are clean no metal refill oil and replace filter.
If metal shavings are in oil and filter, tow to mechanic.

 

Yeah pull the oil and cut open your filter cartridge if you're worried about it.

 

Do you change your own oil, or take it in to be changed?
Maybe the filter has not been changed. possible it was very tight, and the tech didn’t want to mess with it.

 

OP .... Ouch !! I Really feel for you. I'd get it (Towed?) to the Shop and have it thoroughly checked.... Things like like this are best resolved ASAP - It least you will know where you stand and can make a decision on direction .....

 

Is the engine making any ticking or knocking sounds?

 

GO TO THE SHOP. That happened to me this summer on 2015. Two weeks later i spun a crank bearing. Only plus side is i got a 2020 now!

 

Filter should catch any metal you could see. Check the filter.

 

Yea def check the filter. Crank bearings are made of aluminum and aren't magnetic. It collect on your drain plug either. It just keeps cycling through the engine like sandpaper.

 

Even drain and refill with new oil and filter. Did you do the oil change or have it done?

 

I have the oil changed due to dealer limited lifetime warranty. I’m going to check the filter to see if shavings are in the filter. Is the factory drain plug magnetic? The truck is driving like normal.

 

If the engine is covered by warranty contact someone at the dealer and ask what to do next. Don't do anything.

That’s my next step. I bought the truck out of town and am having my local Toyota dealer look at it, but they aren’t very impressive. Has anyone dealt with Total Warranty Service? That’s who the lifetime warranty is through according to the dealer.

So you have an aftermarket warranty? Scour your paperwork, and then call them. They should honor warranty at any dealer, but I'd read first, if they have an idea you're asking coverage details, they may tell you what costs them the least.

 

I missed that. I thought it was a Toyota warranty. Yeh call your warranty company.

 

Evidently. The only thing that concerns me is that I changed the oil myself twice during the time everyone was shutting down due to COVID, which should technically void the warranty under normal circumstances. My area was a hot spot for it then and I wasn’t going to chance getting it (I have health sensitive family). You have to provide all service records when filing a claim for warranty work. I guess the first step is diagnose the problem then hope for the best.
