Pardon my ignorance on this topic but, apart from holding your gear...what would you use that for?

Were you guys saying that you have not had to use a plate carrier for several years and I missed the point of your comment?

I only used these frames when I was deployed and I had to wear full gear all the time except in the office, the gym, or in my tent. The gear was issued to me on my way over, and then I turned it in at the end of my last deployment once I got back. Pictures of these things really bring back a lot of memories, and not all of them good.

Would it be inappropriate to say I admire your "thing"? lol...

I love my Holosun reticle! Only used it out to 100 yd but I'm hoping that my glasses will help offset my astigmatism for less "flaring" and I can take a bit further out...

I got a Larue RISR on a CTR stock, but damn is the cheek weld too high! I'm looking over my iron sights and I have to smash my face into the stock to get a good sight picture. Nice concept, but I'm not shooting risers and RDS, just my old faithful iron sights.

Everyone's got an opinion. Lucky for you, I'm in need of opinions.

Kinda interested in picking up an AR, mostly for fun at the range and in the desert. Don't need it right this second, I have plenty of other guns - I can wait until the panic subsides and things aren't way overpriced. That said - I borrowed a friend's basic Ruger AR-556 today and while I like the platform, I wasn't really happy with the overall quality of that particular model. Hated the gritty, long/heavy pull trigger - I missed the nice, smooth, even trigger from my bolt-action .308. Other than that everything was okay, I guess, but things like slop in the butt stock and the janky feel of the bolt/slide thingy weren't what I'd expected.

So, opinions: What stock AR-15 model, chambered in the common 5.56mm, would you guys recommend to a newcomer to the platform - a newcomer that is accustomed to decent-quality bolt-action rifles and wants the same level of quality from an AR? And, of course, cost is a consideration - I ain't made of cash! :)

I've been told "build one", but I know almost nothing about the platform, and nothing at all about piece-parts, what works well together, etc. I would end up with a Frankenrifle. Maybe buying a basic model and strategically upgrading is a decent path?

    TIA.

Bolt Trigger vs stock milspec AR-15 trigger = apples vs oranges.

Having said that, triggers are an easy upgrade in the AR platform. There are some really nice ones.

I have a Ruger 556 and dropped a Larue MBT trigger in it. Turned it into a totally different rifle. Any mil-spec trigger in an AR is going to have a long gritty pull to it. It does get better the more rounds you shoot too. Buy you a factory model of your choice, and drop a Velocity, Guissele or Larue trigger in it, and you’ll have an awesome shooting rifle.

I use Triggertech in my bolt actions, and Triggertech and occasionally Geissele in ARs. Easy enough.

Slop is subjective. I like a wee bit slop in my LMT SOPMOD but I would be pissed if it was in my Magpul PRS. Two different stocks for two different forms of business.

Definitely this. Any semi-automatic trigger will be worse than a single shot trigger.

On that, Larue MBT for sub-$100, Geissele for sub-$300 duty gun, AR Gold or Timney for a range gun.
