Metal shavings on oil dip stick

Get a maintenance logbook and fill it out. Different pen colors and back dated. use that as proof.

 

Usually when dealerships offer 'lifetime warranties' they come with the caveat that all service is performed by their dealership. It's a way to get service money for the life of the vehicle. Although changing your own oil won't void the Toyota Warranty, it probably voids the one offered by his dealership.

 

just because the engine is running fine now means nothing, it may take some time for damage from this to show. take it to the dealership asap if you are under warranty, don’t drain the oil or take apart your filter...let the dealership see it in the shittiest shape or they’ll brush you off. the more you do the less they have to diagnose/confirm with.

also a magnetic drain plug won’t attract aluminum.

 

I was a service advisor for a repair facility. If its not a Toyota warranty but an aftermarket warranty. Which most likely it is. Then you can take it to any shop. It doesn’t have to be Toyota. They will fight you and the shop every step they can to not pay. As long as your truck is stock and you can prove that you’ve had normal maintenance. The there is nothing they can deny you on. Most aftermarket warranties also will make you pay for diagnostics. Plus deductible. If they find fault and cover the work. Then they will give you the diagnostic money back.

A few metal particles (very tiny ones, specks) aren’t uncommon. They are bits of the engine that wear off under normal metal on metal friction. One of the reasons I run a magnetic drain plug on my vehicles.

I also cut open all my used oil filters and expect to see a few every time. Seeing more....like more than 6-10, and we are talking little specks, is cause for concern. It shows excessive wear is occurring and may point to impending failure. Anything bigger than a speck is cause for serious concern as those bigger pieces are circulating through your system and will be scoring and damaging things as they go.

If you have metal that is making it past your filter and showing up on your dipstick I’d be....concerned :/

 

How does changing your own oil void the warranty?

 

In my experience it only will void it if you can’t prove you did it. So I’ve seen people take a maintenance book and just write in oil change on this date at this many miles. You just have to have Proof that service has been done. One of there first questions is normally oil related if it has to do with engine warranty work.

 

Lifetime warranty. " sorry sir. Your engine is dead so it is not alive so it will not be covered under the lifetime warranty"

 

Some vehicle owners have no clue what they’re doing, so they won’t warranty work that is not performed by a “professional”...

 

The warranty allows work to be done anywhere, as long as there is proof of maintenance records.

 

I hope to get pics this morning. The shavings are small, but still big enough to worry. I checked the dip stick throughout the day and fewer shavings appeared every time I checked it. Not sure if they are settling to the bottom or if there are actually fewer.

Dude. Shavings? Not good. That symptom can indicate a damaged main bearing about to implode. Or a spun rod.

 

Or a clogged oilfilter on bypass, and oil pump failure. All kinds of crap.
Or something simple like a scraped dipstick tube.
So drain and change and check. Its either nothing or something. That solves the mystery.

This will give you a good idea of what amount of metal is floating around in there.

 

A filter on bypass could be a reason that he sees them on the dipstick but ‘shavings’ of metal wouldn’t point to a pump failure....unless bits of impeller are now floating around. Isn’t the Tacoma impeller plastic? Also dipstick tube scrapings creating multiple shavings? [/QUOTE]

Agreed. I wouldn't think an engine issue would leave metal shavings on the dipstick. Oil pan and filter, yes, but not the dipstick.

 

I'm not sure why changing yer own oil/filter would void the warranty... (Maybe I should check the fine-print on my new 2020?) ..
I only say that as the last new anything I bought was the wife's Forester and since the Subaru dealer is a two hour drive each way from here .. I asked about the oil/filter change and they told me that as long as I kept records with receipts, I was good.
Either way, metal shavings on/in ANYthing at all is never-ever a good thing. I'd do as others said... Tow it in and let Toyota handle it.

 

He has an aftermarket warranty through Total Warranty Service. Aftermarket warranties as well as those provided by dealerships have their own exclusions. I believe the OP already stated he could change his own oil as long as he could prove his maintenance records.

For example my 2020 has a 'lifetime warranty and lifetime oil changes' through my dealership. However the fine print states that I must get all of my service work done through them after my ToyotaCare expires. For some people they don't mind this as they were gonna let the Dealership do their maintenance anyways, for others like me I won't use any of the lifetime crap as I do my own maintenance thus voiding my dealerships lifetime warranty and oil change offer.
