That >8,000 lb. winch is a waste of money.

Is an”expert fire starter” some sort of Boy Scout merit badge?

I came make a fuzzy stick with the best of them. And maybe someday I’ll need to. But until then I’ll just use matches or a lighter. It’s called progress.

That is way too much weight and money.

OK I am done haha I can't anymore. I think other people are right in saying he is still out getting unstuck since his last post.

Nope. With his mechanical genius, he probably tried to use a Hi Lift to assist and is lying dead under his vehicle.

The problem is that the setup suggested by the OP is more expensive and probably heavier than a winch.

I get the point of simple and lightweight. But, this suggestion is neither.

The opposite could be said for mechanics too. Not that production crews I've worked with haven't had great ideas over the years. But many times they are only seeing the problem the current design creates for them and not how their solution affects the rest of the system.

Almost always. Engineers have surprisingly little say in the design of a product. The process pretty much starts with product marketing teams (customer research, retail opportunity, product life targets, etc). Finance applies a cost limit based on the retail opportunity and business margin requirements. Next the industrial design group makes artwork on how they think the product should look. Many times they don't account for any actual real life design requirements (often times there are extra parts just so there is a color break so it eats into the budget for actually making the product robust...because most people buy things based on how they look, not how long they last). Then there's US and international regulatory/compliance requirements and internal safety standards. There's external considerations like the size of the shelf that the box will be on at the retailer among about 1000 other stupid requirements (labels, you wouldn't believe how much discussion there is about the tiny words on products that nobody reads). All of this predetermined before engineering even starts trying to make the product. As an engineer you're mostly trying to make the best product you can while your hands are tied behind your back. It can be extremely frustrating especially when you get criticized after-the-fact because you didn't move the bolt 1/8" to the left to make some service guy's job easier.

Edit: I forgot to mention that schedule is usually a huge hurtle as well. Many times we don't have time to iterate through designs to fix relatively small issues (like service related design items). So while we might identify things that could be better, we can't make the change due to the impact to the schedule. Most of the project I work on these days need to be "close to the pin" (that's the phrase my boss likes to use) on the first iteration. There's just no time in the schedule for fixing secondary and tertiary design concerns.

Saw this yesterday, thought of this thread. It's even a TRD Sport, right?

Nah, I think the OP is a ways south of me. I see this truck regularly at one of the local big box stores, pretty sure they work there. I frequently see the truck parked next to a spotless built up Jeep, I like to think that the winch was put on to troll the Jeep.

We've been getting a crap ton of rain lately, I'm sure OP is out scouting locations to do his test like he said he would in his last message here.

    See below:

The bed was so full of panties that I couldn't see if there were any snatch blocks (ha! that's a funny) or extensions :p

I'm thinking of switching careers to engineering or design. I'd appreciate any insight if you ever have the time!

Don't you dare come in here with new technology like that. The old ways are best: I bang sharp rock against sparky rock until it releases the angry hot demon from the leaves.
