    Hey All,
I recently bought a used 2019 TRD off-road with 8K miles from a dealer in Illinois. It came with kahu gps installed(I didn't pay for it). I didn't think anything of it at the time but after a little research, i absolutely do not want it installed.

I can't seem to locate where they installed it. I talked to a service tech at my local dealer(in Cincinnati) and they said they normally installed close to the OBD port.
I removed the kicker panel in the drivers foot well, carpet, and the sill plate and couldn't find it there.

Does anyone have experience removing these?
or anyone have instructions for removing the panel below the steering wheel? I see three 10mm bolts on the panel but I don't want to start pulling hard on the panel with an air bag installed right there.

I couldn't find any similar threads after searching TW, thanks for any help!

Out of curiosity, did you buy from Napletons? Just bought a 2020 and suspect I have one too. They tried to upsell the Kahu subscription to me as they recover vehicles in an average of 20 minutes in the event of vehicle theft. Promptly shut them down. Service records indicate the module was installed and I see nothing about it being uninstalled. Like you I did research on it and would love to get rid of it. I haven't put much effort into it but will post back if I figure it out. Worried they spliced into vehicle wiring to install.

I did buy it from napleton, something I will never do again. Absolutely horrible dealership.
Tried to pull the shadiest financing tricks to swindle us out of our hard earned money. I'm glad I did my research before going.

But I picked up a 2019 TRD off-road with premium and technology packages, only 9000 miles on it for 33k. So I'm not too upset about it.

I'm going to dive into it next weekend, if I find it I'll post it and let you know

Thanks OP for motivating me to revisit this. That article is what made me suspicious and investigate. Looking from the bottom up, I was pretty sure my truck had this device installed but there was no way to get to it from below. What I had to do is remove the kick panel on the lower left - one twist off plastic nut and remove the lower dash - 2 phillips screws/ 1 10mm bolt. The lower dash can just be popped down out of place after removing the screws. Once I did that, this is what I saw:

It was double sided taped on that ledge way up there with the green square. Cut two zip ties, pull out all the wiring. Unhook the harness from the trucks OBDII port and replace it back in the OBDII holder. I just yanked the module out and it was all gone. End result:

Thankfully the dealership was smart enough to use this OBDII harness and NOT tap into factory wiring.

Thank you so much! I'm in the process of doing it right now. Looks like I have the same model installed, they didn't splice the wires either just plugged into the OBD

I worked at Honda. They used Kahu, remove that shit ASAP.

Can’t tell you how many clients came in with dead batteries. The parasitic drain came from kahu.

Look at the OBDII port for a harness and zip ties behind the dash and follow wires. You’re most likely going to have to pull out dash panels.

    Unrelated to Tacomas, but....

How much can one of those Kahu units do (except for drain the battery) while connected directly to battery but nothing else? I ask because I found one of these connected to my fathers 2016 Silverado, connected to ONLY the battery. I tried convincing him to just let me disconnect it but that failed, so just curious. The dealer shoved it up behind the battery in the fender well area, just dangling around in there.

This looks suspicious but it doesn't look like the other ones you guys posted.. it's the only thing wrapped in electrical tape directly on the wire.

My dad picked up a pair of 2004 BMW 745il's from our repo friend. We sold one of them, and kept the other, the one we kept had a gps tracker installed in it by the FBI... we only found out 2 years later when the FBI called and asked if we owned the car. They came out a few days later and removed it... turns out the last owner of the car was a big drug dealer. So for 2 years, the fbi watched as this car made runs from FL to MN once a month.

Doesnt help you much, but I thought I would share my gps tracker experience.

I mean it won't harm the vehicle. But it's a gps tracker tied to the VIN of the vehicle so that's not great. Debt collectors, governments, etc etc have access to that location data.

(Going to ignore that smartphones exist for this post)

    Bone stock.....for the moment.
Just bought my 2021 TRD OR from Napletons and they included this crap on mine as well. Its been 3 weeks and they never gave me instructions on how to transfer the account into my name which has me paranoid they are still monitoring my truck. I will be removing mine asap as well.

I got an email from Kahu about three months after purchasing the truck with a pin and instructions to download the app. Long after I already ripped out the module!

Looks like we have about the same truck. Welcome to TW!

    They probably are lol

Napleton just plugs theirs into the factory OBD port. You can easily remove it without taking off trim panels.
