We're having that problem with our dog. We got her in April (rehome) because Cassie was working from home and wanted some company. Now she's gone back to work in the field and I have to spend an hour every night when I get home just running the dog to burn off some of the energy she's built up home alone all day.

When we're getting ready to leave in the morning she is totally full of nervous energy because she knows we're leaving for the day; makes it hard to get out the door. We usually run her for a while in the AM, but she still starts freaking out when I'm getting ready to go.

Currently traveling down the east coast. Started on the vineyard. 2 dogs in the back.

do you use a crate? For some that creates a safe place for them.

We were for a while but it wasn't making any difference (still the same AM freakout, still the same manic energy when we got home) so we don't bother putting her in any more. She can still go into it during the day if she wants, but she doesn't wreck the house or anything while we're gone so we just let her roam the indoors during the day.

I'd start leaving her for a few hours a day if possible. get her used to you being gone.
WHEN you go back to Indy, there's a place called Barbecue and Bourbon. I fucking LOVE that place. We went there twice when we went in June of 2019. I actually bought some of their 7 pepper sauce and took it home with us. It's really close to the speedway too!
Our (almost) 2 year old Jester loves his crate. It's his little apartment. He willingly goes in on his own, which is awesome.

Toby was initially in his crate at night when he was a puppy, but he is persistent and kept crying and clawing at the gate, and my ex took pity on him and let him out once.. and that was all it took!

On the plus side, the pupperonis are warm as hell in the winter, and they're both 13lbs, so they don't take up TOO much room!

This is awesome. Lol. What kind of pup?

tip that will save you years of frustration, let the dog fall asleep with you, and carry them to the crate for a week or two, after that do the same thing but shut the door, don’t lock it. A week or so later, your golden. No whining. We’ve done this with all our border collies.

Luckily she does pretty well. When I first got her, the rescue included a pretty regimented crate training program that they've had great success with. She's a greyhound, so routine is something they feel comfort in due to the environment they come from. I did my best to follow it, the only accidents she had were due to my timing, so can't fault her for that.

I can be out and about for a few hours and not worry. Early on there was a chocolate cake incident that left me with a $1000 emergency vet bill. :spending: Now I'm really careful about not leaving anything tempting out.

Greyhound! They are a surprisingly easy breed. Despite being a former racing dog she is lazier than me. Hoping to give her a comfy retirement.

Shameless plug, but if anyone is considering a greyhound check out Maine Greyhound Placement in Augusta. There are a lot of tracks closing in Florida so they are about to get a bunch of dogs coming north.

Hell man that's pimping! When I got my license my mother gave me a 1974 Ford Pinto. It was yellow with a black vinyl top and it was all rusted out, it was a 4 speed though. I said thanks and threw it out in the yard with a for sale sign on it. I got $200 for it and bought a red 1975 Maverick 6cyl 3 on the tree.

That one is a maybe at best. I didn't not like Indianapolis. It was a very strange introduction for me. I came from Lake Michigan down through corn fields into Indianapolis. I was passing corn farms and more corn (maybe soybeans). Out of nowhere, I crest over a hill and exclaim "What, why is there a giant, new Hilton hotel there?", highway bends to the right and you're suddenly in a Dr. Seuss level perfectly manicured suburb called Carmel. The dog park requires membership, and there's just condo complex after condo complex, and they're all perfectly maintained.

It wasn't bad, but it was weird. Which I think that overshadowed the rest of Indy for me. I literally pulled off the highway and sat outside a theatre around here:

    (not my photo)

And literally just sat in the truck for a few minutes trying to figure out what the hell had just happened. I was sitting there thinking to myself "FOUR minutes ago I was on a single lane road going through corn farms with NOBODY around....Now I'm in the middle of Dr. Seussville WHAT THE F@#$"

After that, went to a dog park. The gates were open when I got there so I just walked in. It was really cool, wide open, well maintained. I was talking to someone else there and it became clear to me that....it was a members only dog park, where they test DNA of un-retrieved droppings against current members. There was a waiting list for 2 years. I just snuck in. Problem was, the gates were RFID to get through, to exit as well! So I was stuck until someone came in and held open the gate for me. Nobody came, so I was surrounded by hoity toity wealthy folks (or the illusion thereof) staring at me as I picked up my 45lb catahoula, tucked her under my arm, and hopped two gates to get out.

    :burnrubber:

...That was like, Day 3 of my road trip. Made it down to Louisville that evening. Another place I really enjoyed but probably will not go back to.

    Doggo in Louisville.

Greyhounds can sprint, but otherwise they're pretty lazy dogs. Think about the past generations of breeding: fast to sprint, but not full of energy so they can take just sitting in cages for long stretches between races.

More doggo pictures since we're talking about dogs.

She was my copilot. Would go between front and back seat whether she wanted to spread out to nap or not.

one of my dogs is so perfect most of the time, shed run away but everything else she is mint. the other however, got ahold of and ate 5 bananas. she eats random crap and pukes sometimes. we can't leave her out during the day but we can at night (mostly). no idea how to get her to stop, she has hight anxiety and takes prozac etc but doesn't calm her down. shes some sort of lab mix that was found in the woods and had a busted leg. guessing she was abused and some sort of failed hunting dog. zero focus and tons of energy. I tell her I am going to sell her to the rodeo and theyll have squirrels ride her around or something. shes a sweatheart and beautiful but a nutcase

I knew she'd be lazy coming in, but not to this extent. This is how she spends most of the morning.

Your dog is gorgeous! I didn't realize there are elite dog parks, though it is really well maintained it looks like!

Indy is weird like that. I drove one day from Indy to Effingham, IL to have lunch with a buddy who lives in St. Louis. It was a half way point. We ate at a place called Effing Brew Co. Super good too.

Try ignoring your pup an hour before you leave, and until they calm down when your home. It will teach them not to get excited about coming and going and they only get attention when you are calm. Maybe fill up a kong bone and give it to her in the morning to work some energy out.

Later, instead of running, grab a treat or two and break it into a million small pieces. Show your dog what you have, lock her in a room (GF can join to keep her calm) and then hide them! Make it easier at first until she gets the hang of it a few times, then make it harder and harder.

They will get tired AF, mentally and physically from huffing and searching the house. We have 5 dogs and on rainy days a round or two knocks them right out.

edit: Our dogs perform much better in the woods tracking animal trails and following scents to us. It really teaches them to use their noses like they should be!

Thanks. Yeah, Catahoula. They're a mix of australian cattle dog/blue heeler and a bunch of other stuff used for a jack of all trades down south, typically boar hunting and cattle herding. She's small though only 45lbs so she's probably mixed with some other stuff. She's an interesting breed, they're full of energy but not hyper energy. I grew up with a husky, hyper. my catahoula can go for hours and hours, BUT if she only had half an hour a day, she'd be okay with that for exercise.

She's also lazy and enjoys just sleeping on the bed all day, and she hates the cold. She really hates the cold, it's awesome. Such a nice change from a husky!

He embraced it and called it the man van. Some other kid crashed into it leaving school one day and given how little the van was worth by then, that was the end for it.
