Any PC Builders Out There?

How often do you boys upgrade video cards? My first ever PC build is coming up on 3 years (7700k, 1080ti) and still blows me away with 1440p performance. Maybe I'll jump to a new GPU in a year or two.

I had a 680 from 2012 all the way until 2017. So a very long time without really running into many games that it stumbled on. Then again, I was also playing on a 24" TN 144hz 1080P monitor so I wasn't really needing to push many frames. In 2017 I started merging/stitching imagery from a drone with Pix4D, which requires CUDA to be viable timewise, so I upgraded to the 1070. After that a 2080, then 2X2080 (trying to cut time off stitching), then a 2080Ti (consumer SLI didn't work with Pix4D as I was promised it would), and finally my 3090.

I'd say that if I just gamed and had to use all of my own money, not work funds, on graphics card then I would upgrade probably every second or third cycle on average. Once you go up to 1440P at +240hz or 4K though I'd upgrade almost every generation as long as the improvement is worth the cost.

One big caveat for you, the 1080Ti is kind of the card that won't die. I mean it's roughly a 2080 in most ways and the 2080 is still going to be competitive against a 3060 from what I've seen. nVidia in many ways wishes they never released the 1080Ti, its popularity in the used market killed their 20 series sales if you believe what's being said behind closed doors. So by no means, especially at 1080P, do you need a new card. Again, if you game at higher resolutions or need super high frame rates for your high refresh monitor to play PVP games than it could be worth it.

 

Same could be said with nvidia drivers though. (to either pull away or to close gap AMD is ahead in)

Still a ~15-20% performance gap between 3080 and 6800xt ray-tracing. (in benchmarks Ive seen with no DLSS). AMD definitely did a good job for their first implementation of it. I'd imagine AMD's DLSS version is going to be the same as their Ray-Tracing...a good first implementation but still behind nvidia. But makes RDNA3 quite interesting since AMD will be more mature in both of them.

The benchmarks showing the DLSS were kind of silly too. Lets show a benchmark that one card doesnt even support (yet)

Nice I had a 7700k/1070 build that I sold this year for $600 and included a 1440P monitor.

Besides bragging rights I see no real reason for you to upgrade or build a new system.

Until Ryzen came out Intel was slow at performance gains on CPU. I could go 5 years without realizing my cpu was bottleneck.

I upgraded my GPU each new release.

 

We've seen AMD close 15% gaps before a couple of months after launch. Not that it will happen, I agree with you that anything is possible, but history has shown AMD does well when their drivers age.

Meh, if you play games without ray-tracing they're a good deal. Especially if a game supports Vulkan. If you want ray tracing though, nVidia is the way to go.

 

Q1 should be quite an interesting time thats for sure. AMD releasing their DLSS and nvidia offering their Smart Acess

 

I picked up a 6800xt this morning, hopefully my 5900x ships in the next week or two and I can finally build this thing. I havent run AMD in a long long time, should be a fun change for a while.

 

Where did you find yours? From what I've heard supply was just as bad as nVidia 3080 launch day.

 

newegg, i ordered at 6:02 a.m and I rechecked and they were sold out within a couple of minutes after that. I follow a few discords for stock drops and a notification popped up and i followed it, just searching on newegg never did yield anything when doing a general search. I avoided AMDs site this time, it was a shit show for the processors with links going dead, screens not loading and stock you could not actually get into your cart. The gpu is in transit and should be in hand friday, unless ontrac wants to take the long way again and cost me some additional time

 

Eyo. Late to the party but here's my set up. The TV has moved since. Still playing with where I want it. TV also hooked up to PC.

32GB DDR4 RAM
Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z170 Motherboard

Nothing SPECTACULAR but my GTX 1080 is still running strong. Can still play most things on ultra, except Red Dead. Had for about 5 years so far and only had to replace fans, added to RAM, and of course the peripherals.

we had to put a new roof on the house this year, unfortunately the flooring money went to that. Hopefully in the spring we can do the bedrooms upstairs and the basement, I miss playing pool and not being on bare concrete.
