Any PC Builders Out There?

Landed a 3070 today through Best Buy.

what cpu would you guys recommend for gaming?

I was thinking a i5 10600k bc from what I read ghz speed is best vs more cores.

 

10700k boost way higher, plus more cores for "stuff"

I need a 3080 Founders Edition for my Mini ITX case.. if anyone finds one

 

Gonna gut it and build the mini ITX in the GPU's footprint?

Ryzen 5600. Beats the 10600k pretty much in everything and goes blow for blow with the 10700k (generally slightly ahead) and isn't far behind the 10900k for gaming.

But the bigger thing...less power usage on the 5600. So easier to cool and less power usage

If you were leaning towards intel...I'd wait for the rocket lake which should drop in q1 or early q2.

Or if you are just trying to buy right now...could just be whatever you can grab lol

 

Saw a 3090 ITX build on reddit today that looked slick. "Xbox on steroids" or something I think it was titled.

 

Well, I decided to kick off my next build. Have a case and an optical drive coming tomorrow. Would like to make this a Linux machine, since I have a SSD with Mint loaded & ready to go. All I need now is a CPU/MOBO/RAM, video card...lol I'll pull the power supply out of the computer it's replacing.

Question, how "powerful" should I make this machine? Do I go with a Intel i-7 or i9, or is that overkill? (currently running a i7 in this machine).

I've never had a Linux machine before, so I don't know it's full capabilities. The SSD with Linux is from my current machine's build from last year. Little did I know the Radeon RX 590 wasn't compatible with Linux. Who knows if they have drivers for it yet because I bought a second SSD and loaded Win-10.

So, what video card (for Linux) should I buy? It needs to run 2 monitors.

AMD is pretty well regarded as being the best choice for Linux. They offer open source drivers while nvidia's linux support is pretty meh. Unless you need something specific to nvidia...go AMD. As for the 590 not working....have you tried recently? If i remember right (its been awhile now lol) it had more to do with the kernal than the drivers. Distro's that updated kernal stuff often should be fine but ones that dont...might not work.

I followed a few discord channels for 3070/3080 and when one dropped at a store it notify you then you rush to buy it.
