I am a little disappointed with the trade-values I am getting for my vehicle.

I paid 35,000 for the vehicle (2017 OR MT SB), and I am getting trade-in values of $27,000 from dealers and car max

Anyone else getting such low values for their trucks? I see tacomas selling for around 33K for my mileage (61,000) and condition.

Sell it privately. No idea why you would trade in a vehicle. They will sell it for $35k lol (not really but probably close)?

That's a trade in value. You can't expect retail prices. Those are what it would sell for not trade in for

Trade in means a lower price. Dealership buys it off you so they can make money

Sell it to carvana or private sale

I am looking to downgrade (have more cash on hand), and get something that can handle all my kids (4 kids).

I have test drove 3 Lexus GX models: a 2011 with 114,000 miles. A 2008 with 175,000 miles and a 2006 with 140,000 miles. I am a little bit blown-away at the value you can get from these GX models used. The 2011 was only $21,000. The engine was smooth, and the overall feel of the vehicles was S+ quality. I hate to say it, but the Japanese workmanship really shows, and there is noticeable difference compared to my Tacoma.

Plus I'd argue the GX is better off road than the Tacoma, and driving MT on technical courses is actually very difficult at least for me

I almost bought the 2011 today, but my wife dictated to me that any deal I make has to net my $10K in cash. I'll only get $5,000 from that trade-in.

I plan to get a used Tacoma Access cab just for myself next year. Definitely not not brand new one though. So a second-gen V6 is the mostly likely path.

Truth. I thought with all these used vehicles selling at 35K and my truck is really in pristine condition. I thought 30K would be possible.

Doesn't have anything to do with Japanese workmanship....but everything to do with category the GX is in. It's a high quality, high priced vehicle that competes in a completely different category than the pedestrian Tacoma does.

Nice vehicles. Underneath all that Lexus fluff is the Land Cruiser Prado as it's known in the rest of the world. Highly capable off roaders.....though most GXs see little more than the wet grass at the kid's soccer game

Not sure if you actually see them “selling” or if you are seeing them “asking” as your comparison. There is quite a difference and car sales people have to eat too. You could always sell it on your own and see what market bears and then walk into the next deal cash in hand, no trade to muddy up the numbers.

FWIW, you’re trying to downsize financially in this scenario and that makes you a sheep amongst wolves. They’ll give you a nibble, just enough to make you think you’re getting your end result all the while, they’re looking at a max profit deal.

Sell it private party. Trading it in is just lazy.

    4Runner also can seat 7 and has a V8 option from 03-09

I like the GX a lot better than the 4runner.

FYI, Carvana was offering $28K. However, once I listed modifications on my vehicle they wouldn't even give me an offer.

I just sold a truck that Carvana and Carmax offered $47.5k for. I did the Kelley Blue Book instant value which said one of their dealers would offer $49k and when I took it into one they offered $52k right off. KBB might be worth checking out for you.

MT most likely hurts your trade in value at a dealer as well. They want to move that truck as fast as possible and having a MT in the USA greatly reduces that customer pool to which the dealer has access to for your truck.

Trade in value < wholesale value < retail value

dealers will give you below wholesale for trade because in event the unit doesn’t move, they can wholesale it and still break even especially if it sits for 2-3 months to depreciate. I don’t know of any dealer that will give you anywhere near market value for a car unless their making it on the other end of the deal.

I was surprised by the KBB instant offer I received on my wife's car. We sold it (2017 Tahoe) to one of their affiliate dealerships for $6k over the lease buyout price Chevy wanted. Worth a shot for sure... plus like anything else, you can haggle with them when you get there (I got an extra $500 over KBB instant offer).

Stock is actually more valuable to most dealers.

Definitely the truth. People always seem to have the misconception that mods increase value. No way....not in the real world. In fact, they're often a detriment. Few people are willing to gamble on what may or may not have been done or whether it was done properly.

It might be different in a private sale where the buyer can make a decision for themselves.
