I’ve only ran a couple of tanks through my new Sport but it quickly became obvious that 5th & 6th can almost be considered overdrive gears, especially around town.
Since this engine is happier in the higher rpms has anyone else wondered if you’re actually hurting gas mileage when using these gears and lugging the motor at too low a speed?

Those are OD gears. 4th is 1:1.

Nope. Once broken in, I can cruise around smoothly at low RPMs, esp with the tune.

That is the beauty of MT. You can drive it however it feels right.

Mt mileage: poor I have around 12k on my 2019 and get better mileage around town than highway.

fourth gear at around 47mph the mileage indicator all the way up to 30mpg.

I keep my RPM's between 2K-3K regardless of what gear I'm in and seem to get a consistent 19 MPG. On So.Cal. freeways there are times I can drive 50 miles or more and never have need to get into 6th. I come from the air-cooled VW World and don't like to lug engines if I can avoid it.

6 manual has no direct gearing 5 and 6 are overdriven. 18-20 is doable 20-23 on the highway.

Is the mileage indicator actually accurate? Both the current MPGs and the tank MPGs? On my 4R (2003) the est MPGs is always a couple high when I actually average out the tank.

    It's a shame 5th isn't 1:1.

I get 13-15 mpg now with a roof rack. 16 mpg when I was stock.

When it's time to fill up the tank the final number is very accurate on my truck, + or - .1 or .2.

Modern ones are fairly accurate. It's rare, but the farthest off mine has been was .5 MPG, roughly. I manually calculated it enough times to trust the accuracy.

Ahhh.......I didn't know 4th was 1:1. This all makes sense now.

I only have a little under 1,000 miles on the truck so not too concerned about gas mileage yet, although it IS fun to play with the mileage called out in the readout. I've found the readout to be very accurate also with the couple of full tanks I've ran though it. It's been within a tenth of a gallon.

I've also got a tune on it but only the basic regular gas tune. I was in a hurry to get rid of that funky throttle response. I'll start to play with the other tunes when I get more miles on the truck.

On secondary roads (50-60 mph) I will see the display up in the 25 mpg range, I generally have a pretty light foot. Steady highway cruise control at 70 mph will drop the number down to 21. I am completely stock including tires.

Can you speak to how cruise, particularly adaptive cruise control, work with the manual? In my previous MTs, pressing the clutch would disable it. I'd imagine if you can set adaptive cruise at 70 and traffic slows down to 25 you have to get out of sixth and get down to 3rd. Do you have to re-enable it once you change gears, or will it let you change and remain active? How does the cruise control your speed (decelerating, specifically) when the clutch is depressed? I've been curious but didn't really want to start a thread around it.

Sorry, mine is a 2017 so it only has the old fashioned cruise -- thank goodness... The adaptive cruise became standard on the 2018s.

You can shift with cruise and it remains active

I have a roof rack and 255/70 AT tires so I get around 17-18 mpg, if I am careful I can get it up to 20+ mpg but I do like to drive with a heavy foot and slam through the gears.

I regularly cruise around in 6th gear at 35-40mph, as long as you downshift when you want to accelerate the truck doesn't care.
And the adaptive cruise control is great you can up/down shift and it will remain active, a very nice feature when you go for long road trips.

Two things I would recommend you do for your truck is the ADM (accumulator delete mod) which gives you a much more responsive feel in the clutch and getting an OV Tune, the tune fixes all the lag/lack of power in the engine.
For the tune this guy does it at a 1/4 of the cost of having to buy all the software yourself - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/shellshocks-midwest-tuning-thread.672327/

I easily average around 18.5 to 19 when not really paying attention to my gas mileage. If I am, I can get around 21.5 to 23.

Same here. Put on Duratrac 265/75/16 C loads and maybe lost 0.5-1 mpg.

Big improvement over my previous 2017 Nissan Frontier V6. Was I the 14-16mph range

Related question. Has anyone tried/mastered clutch less shifting in one of these? Or will the truck not allow you to?

I typically double clutch, but haven’t tried clutch less on anything but my motorcycles

I’d want to practice on something old and heading to the junk yard

Good to know that you barely lost any going to the 265/75/16! Looking to go to that size when I need to replace my tires.
