Is it really neccesary to box and weld body mounts?

Hi folk's, i just trimmed my body mounts and am very happy with the no rubbing issue's. I am running 285/75/16's, just a small trim on front plastic and i am set for dog hunting season. My question is do i really need to box and weld where i cut. I have a great idea if it is only for looks. I really do not think it is an issue,but thought i'd ask the experts here on TW! I will post pics when i get it all squared away! 16x10" 4.5" BS with cooper discoverer stt lookin good and now working good! thanks in advance, Mike

 

I think anytime you cut metal leaving a raw opening it is a good idea to fix it up right. In boxing it up I assume that it will protect not only the cut part but the interior of the frame from rust issues. And I'm sure boxing it wil also ad some strength.

 

i know some guys on here that have been wheeling without re boxing in the cut.....
for like over year with no problems whatso ever......

and they wheel their trucks.......

 

..but just think of how much water/mud gets thru that open end of the frame and just sits in there. there may not be any noticable damage after a year, but there will be...just give it time.

 

i dont know if you do much offroading but around here its sand n mud and let me tell you with them boxed in as they are now "stock" they are always packed with sand / mud water
you can rinse them out for days and still get debris .....so that will not be an issue at all.....
most likey will retain less being semi open

x2 months later you will find more mud coming out.

 

have a look and you'll see that that part of the frame gets wet internally anyway. It has holes in it.

 

I do a lot of wheeling this time of year, but really just mud and water. Not a whole lot of rocks or anything extreme. I noticed last year how hard it was to get the mud and sand out of that mount. I am going to take care of where i trimmed so that it does not rust.Now i want a front bumper from relentless fabrication..... i guess it doesn't hurt to want. Maybe next year! Thanks to all that responded.

good choice..its better in the long run, especially if u plan on being the owner of that truck for a while
