Huh. I just plop down ye olde visa and point at my empty tank and they give me a new one. Maybe I look trustworthy.

Most places don't do outright sales these days. If you go through the process you "own" it and then pay to exchange for a filled bottle in cert.

I "bought" my buddy's bottle and every time I go for an exchange I give them his info and the money and they give me a new fill in cert.

I think this is actually what I've got too. First time I went to refill it they told me they don't refill (at that location), and just gave me a new one. The price wasn't bad so I went with it.

This last time I forgot I was a praxair pawn, and went to Airgas - they wouldn't touch it, said I had to go to praxair.

Welding gas is complicated if you've been drinking.

yeah my schedule is flexible enough to squeeze it in on a lunch break. Definitely not convenient for the weekend welders.

Even my local metal monger is open for 4 hours saturday morning, but none of the welding supply places are.

 

Metal Monger is a pretty good name for an indie band
