I like the older ones. I had a 1988 with the straight 6 300 and that was probably the toughest most dependable truck I’ve owned.

 

10 speed trans. will be broken in less than 2 years

 

Go for it, your money, your choice. Just be prepared to live with the results. I hope it holds resell value. Good luck.

In fact I just got finished with a 2450 mile trip towing 7000lbs and I got 17mpg average over the trip so, I’m very happy I have my eco boost 2.7 with a 10 speed transmission.

All that being said I wrote this not to shoot down Tacoma, but rather show that Ford is not crap people just spread misinformation. That pisses me off. I loved my Tacoma and it was perfect for me for a time. Toyota is missing the mark on what makes a difference week to week for most people and that’s fuel economy. The 2.7 and 3.5 get low 20s mpg where Fords ecoboost get low to mid twenties. I’m averaging 23-26mpg in my truck tank by tank and the lifetime fuel consumption rate of 24.3mpg. (That includes all the towing I do!)

 

I wonder if rumors are true and the new Ranger will get that 2.7?

Fords are absolutely not crap. They are complex today, and with complexity comes inherit challenges. My buddy has had two F150's - 3.5 ecoboost and they are awesome - no significant problems, drove both 45-50k miles. Ride smooth like a caddy, handle well (not wallowy), tow awesome, and get great gas mileage. I don't think the ranger is as well thought out as the F150 or tacoma, but that will come in time. I look at Ford trucks differently than Toyotas (which admittedly also have problems). If you're buying a Toyota, you're probably buying it for the Toyota "reliability" to go 150-20K with as few problems as possible, keep it and run it into the ground. If you're buying a Ford truck, you are buying arguably the most advanced truck available today and into the technology cycle, which is moving fast. I would want to evolve with it, and they do not have the resale of Toyotas (which can also turn at any moment). Toyota should be ashamed of some of the decisions taken on the Tacoma (more than Tundra, which is an older platform) given where we are with automotive tech (like this turd of a motor and gearing, the horrible braking system, etc.). That said, the "simplicity" of those choices keep people coming back for more.

I would be all in on a Ranger Raptor. I would also be leasing it.

 

Bronco is getting the 2.7l eco boost don’t see why it wouldn’t transfer over to the Ranger.

 

I laugh when someone states they have so and so miles without issues and vehicle is only a couple years old. I would hope you wouldn't have issues that soon. I like the Ranger's but don't think you will see them on the roads within 10-15+ years. Very good likelihood the Tacoma's will still be kicking around with hundreds of thousands of miles still ticking away unfazed. I also do not see the fuel savings of a 8-10 speed transmission worth the extra maintenance and possibility of expensive repairs.

 

I'm sure it will. Displacement will only help make it a better truck, less strain, more torque, etc. etc. If I hadn't just bought my truck with a mindset that would "fix" everything Toyota didn't (and hope it doesn't backfire on me...) it would be on the shortlist because I just can't daily a full-size. In my current cycle, I'll be looking to electric assist or all electric for my next rig (likely 8-10 years). By then the state I live in will be forcing it either way...

 

Can you imagine a Bronco or Ranger with the 3.5 EcoBoost? Or even the Mustang? Now that would be wicked.

I own a 2019 F250. Interested in what parts do you think make it part of the most advanced trucks available today? The stereo is alright and the integrated oem switch panel for aftermarket accessories is cool too. My 2015 f150 rode horrible and so does my f250 but at least it can tow a house. Neither got near stated mpg.
