The 4.0 wasn't a perfect motor. It was delayed in rolling out in the 4 runner in 03 and had several issues. The preferred motor of that generation of 4runner was the 4.7. Undoubtedly there was ROI math that made the 4.0 feasible in Japan.

How did you have a VVT 4.7 in 02 when it didn't come out until 04?

    Tundra V8 made 315 at 3400 RPM's in '02. And, only 245 HP.

Where are you getting these numbers?

Good luck @20005spd, you have the truck back in your possession? How does it drive, engine is ok? Hope they get you fixed so you're satisfied.

Don't take the truck off the lot until it is proper.

Any chance you have pictures of those areas before the repair?

There is NO excuse for that kind of sloppiness. They have fender covers expressly for that reason. I'

I've noticed that my dealer has started doing walk arounds before they put a vehicle into a service bay. I think I'm going to start joining the service writer when he does that. Just so we are on the same page. And one of my own when I go to pick the truck up.

I hope they make good, but I have the feeling you're going to need to fight them.

I ALWAYS walk around with them and each time say, no scratches no dings, nothing - do you see anything? When he says no, I say good, make note of that... I want
    it back the same way.

What was the final engine diagnoses? Was it indeed a valve spring or something else?

Oh man, I hope you have the before and after scratches documented and I hope did NOT drive off the lot without documenting them.

Oh I'd snap. All the more reason to argue for the platinum (think that's the name) warranty and make sure to mention if they are this careless I'm not really confident they did it right

...^^^... I do the same thing ... ... it keeps everybody on their toes and honest too.

And I have noted at times ... that they even give it to more careful people and tell them to be careful too.
