Well, I traded in my 2019 2WD, AC, V6 Tacoma SR/SX package on a 2021 2WD 4Runner SR5. Why you ask? I’ve owned nothing but small Toyota pick-ups since 1992 (1992, 1998, 2006, 2012) all 2WD with the 4 cylinder and manual transmission. I would run them for 200,000 miles and trade in for a new one until……..2019. I come to find out there are no more of these small trucks. So I got the above 2019, mistake, barely fit into my garage, and after driving it 25,000 miles I decided it was time to trade in.

I didn’t like: Power delivery of the V6 and transmission, interior noise, a hum from the rear end, after about 10,000 miles front brakes started shaking when applied, radiator replaced due to crack, still had an anti-freeze smell(couldn’t find a leak) and who designed the radio knobs?

I purchased a 2021 4Runner as I have a trailer now so can get away with not owning a pick-up. In addition it has the older V-6 and I hate to say it but it’s made in Japan. So far I really like it and have removed the rear seat bottoms, folded down rear seat backs flat so now I can store my crap where the seat bottoms were and really have a large open flat area for the dog, and could sleep back there on trips if I wanted to. Gas mileage is worse, and the window controls seem to be high up on the door but otherwise it meets my idea of a quality trustworthy vehicle, whereas my 2019 Tacoma I had lost trust in it.

We have both vehicles (2019 and 2017) and like them both, but use the Tacoma far more. To each their own, but it sounds like you had a terrible Tacoma. I've put about 17,000 miles on my Tacoma since April and I can't say I've had any issues like that. Prior service records also indicate no issues. A shaky brake pedal can come from any number of things, but mostly the way it is driven. That's most likely rotor warp and it's related to heating and cooling and the rate at which it is done. Cheaper rotors are more likely to warp.

Quite frankly, the only real thing I like about the 4.0L more is the subtle noise difference upon cold starts. Both engines have been bulletproof for us so far. The 4Runner also feels like I'm pushing the brake pedal to the floor to stop, but I don't think it's malfunctioning; I think it's just because I'm used to the Tacoma where you push it 20% and it feels like you're slamming on the brakes.

There are a number of scenarios where the Tacoma excels. Hauling dirty stinky stuff, getting deep in the woods with a dirt bike in the bed, etc.

But, for a lot of folks the 4runner is a good option. I own both.

Sorry to hear about your bad Tacoma experience. I own both ( 2020 Tacoma and 2016 4Runner). They both have their uses and I love them both.

'93 4Runner (the one every SUV is still trying to be) (with 413,000 miles) and 2019 Taco. Definitely the 4Runner. Even with a bad head gasket.

If you like a 4Runner, you will love a Land Cruiser. Our made in Japan LC Heritage drinks fuel like it has a hole in the gas tank, but it is awesome.

I also have a 2018 4Runner and the wife and I love it. It's nice having a truck bed with the Tacoma, but I also noticed weirdness in the brakes, and of course the transmission. I frankly like the 4Runner's transmission better. MPG is actually not much less (1 to 2 mpg).

Both are great! Also own both vehicles and although I love the taco, the 4Runner is just so much more comfortable to drive. Enjoy!

So we’re just gonna ignore the whole 2wd 4Runner thing. That’s cool.

It's been addressed a few times, I believe. Let's just say said comments are no longer here.

Yeah, cause who cares if it’s 2wd or 4wd. If it suits the OP’s need then so be it. Not everyone needs a 4wd
