I am planning to have a ski plate installed and would like to know TW's thoughts on the TRD skid plate or going with an after market company that gives more underbody coverage?

The aftermarket is designed to fit with the existing mounts under the truck.

here is a reference to other options I am look at.

    Thank yoU!

Its not really a skidplate, more of a splashguard. If you are looking for solid protection, my advice would be aftermarket. My factory “skid plate“ has done great for the little wheeling ive done so far but its got plenty of dents/dings, etc. I will be upgrading to aftermarket sometime for extra piece of mind.

I've gone with the CBI skid plate myself but many people like the TRD plate, RCI, DV8, etc.. I think people will ask what you are doing with the truck. Do you require steel or aluminum, are you going to beat it to death or not... etc.

I don't off road often and I wanted something light weight. So I went with an RCI aluminum skid. I really like the TRD **Pro** skid plate, which is also aluminum. The normal tacoma skid plate is trash.

Steel is stronger, heavier, and can/will rust. Wasn't worth it for me. YMMV

I am definitely still in the baby it phase... but i bought it to adventure and explore the PNW so there is going to be some bumps and bruises along the way.
I am assuming the steel gives more protection but is heavier than aluminum (weighing the differences)...

That's how I planned to use my truck so I went with the CBI aluminum for weight's sake. We'll see how it holds up through the years haha. Good luck with your decision! I don't think you'll go wrong with an aftermarket aluminum in the "baby it phase". Plus there are kits for the full undercarriage as mentioned earlier.
