What Chainsaw do you run?

Any questions on what me and the boys did today

 

I can tell you that the husky 550 xpmk2 ate up that oak and wanted more! Ran an Oregon m80 speed cut chain on it today. Had 2- 1/4 cuts to make yet which I saved for last due to the wood being “dirty” .... if it weren’t for the “dirty” wood I would of been able to finish that some 40 ft oak measuring 46” wide at the base tree . I couldn’t tell you the last time we had this much fun!

 

Cutting big wood is the best especially when you don't have to mess with the brush

 

Hopefully the beer came after the chainsaw work.

 

Yes... brother joe dropped off the first load, by the time he got back i had the rest cut up and he’s says... break time!! Perfect timing it was.

as far as the tree limbs and all, I got this in with a small tree company who leaves the big stuff lay for joe and I to grab if we need wood.... can’t work out any better for the both of us. They don’t wanna deal with the big wood and we want the big wood and not deal with the branches

 

These are my saws and Snickers, Saws were bought new and serve there purpose well. Old 266 SE ,bought went I worked for a log house builder shortly after I got out of school ,still a great saw. About 10 years ago I bought the 346 XPG ,great power to weight ratio and it has heated handles with is very nice as I cut most of my wood in the dead of winter .Last year I got the MS 170 as I wanted a lightweight saw to carry in my camper and also to try carving with.I also have a carving bar for it ,

this is my first attempt ,my daughter told me it was a self portrait ,she's a brat

 

Lol she loves you dad! Great saw collection. I’m in the same boat with you with that 170.... I wouldn’t mind having a limber myself. See what I can myself into next couple days or so with the sales going on... one never knows what I may find on a “good” deal ;-)

 

Sorry -- but this is BS!
I have been cutting with saws for 45 years -- if the saw leaks bar oil (and I mean bar and chain oil -not motor oil) something is wrong with the saw. I have had Homelites, Poulans, and nowadays -Stihls. The only saw that leaked bar oil was my deceased Father in laws neglected/abused Stihl 021 -- It had a leaky cap - got a new cap and it is one of my 3 Stihl saws I now use. Along with the 021 , I have another inherited, a 170 14 inch and a new 261CM 20 inch.

 

My go-to saw is a modded 026 with a 20" bar. This thing is a straight ripper and I use it almost exclusively.



When I need to cut something big I have the MS 440 Magnum with a 28" bar.

I've used one so far, just to try it. The fit and function are perfect. I can't tell any difference. They come seperately boxed, which is nice.

 

Will be cutting up a silver maple Saturday morning. We’ll see how it goes come Saturday. Waiting on pics to see how much there is to clean up so I know how many trailers/trucks I need. Enjoy your guys thanksgiving as much as possible.... ours is down to 5 members.

note: I’m looking at axes!! Idk I just think I could split some wood for a work out program... one thing, I know not much info on axes. Any information is greatly appreciated!

 

Any axe that fits well in hand. I use to have goodluck with the 8lb heads. Make sure it has the maul not just the axes part.

 

Ok. I did glance at them at tractor supply , they had 6 and 8 lb maul axes.

 

I used to split all my wood with an 8lb maul. Nothing fancy. The learning curve is where to hit. When using a splitter you pay attention to grain and the layout of the log, but in my experience using a maul amplifies the attention required to get relatively easy splits.

They also increase the amount of heat you get out of one log. You get hot cutting it down, splitting it, hauling it, and finally burning it!

 

Just my two cents but I split my wood with a felling axe. Why hoist 8 lbs when 3 gets the job done? With big stuff you have to start from the outside of your round and work your way in, rather than splitting each log in half then half again but I can generally split 6" - 8" chunks of maple in half with one swing.

Also just realised this is the axe equivalent of the 3000lb winch post lol

8lb just gets it done faster. Moved on to a splitter now much easier on the body
