Trade-in value shock

I put it up for sale here, and I got zero interest.

Maybe a MT Tacoma is just not in demand on enthusiasts boards?

 

Sounds like you have to re-write your ad and be specific...
It does not take much effort to ignore / delete and e-mail. Why get upset?

I'm happy to delete a few e-mails for a few grand (- while not getting worked-up about it... if it is raising your blood pressure - then do not do it... - but I do not understand what causes you so much grief...)

 

I don't have patience to wait for the right buyer i think.

 

Private sales take time.

Most people that want an MT went out and found one already.

I like your truck. Great color, and the 2017 M/T is he most desirable of years/transmission.

But like in my case, I already have a truck that I still owe on. Can't justify adding a 30k note to the pile.

 

Too many tire kickers and fraud. Carmax and be done with it.

A few months ago when Carvana and others were paying exhorbant prices for used Tacoma’s it would have. That’s ended for whatever reasons, so your best bet would be to sell it yourself. Ask a little higher price than what you’ll take so they can bargain you down to your required price and get a good deal.

 

The whatever reason is that you can purchase new ones for that price - at least in my case that's what got me to purchase new. I'm in no rush so I can wait a few weeks/months and keep driving around my 4R, so waiting for a dealer to get an MT is a win for me over purchasing a used one for the exact same price.

I suspect that, in addition to MTs just not being as easy to offload (because it takes a specific person to want it - people who don't care can get an Auto and be satisfied vs. people who HAVE to have a manual, which are far less common), means Carvana/Carmax recognize that these things aren't worth what they were paying earlier, or are not selling as quickly as they were when the dealers had absolutely no inventory.

 

The standing offer from carvana on my truck was 28 grand, Dodge dealership was offered me 31 grand. Carvana gave up when I mentioned that it was a manual and the Dodge dealership dropped their offer to 24 grand when they saw that it was a manual.

 

That makes me sad.

not because of the financial implications, but because I have only owned manual vehicles my entire life. The standard transmission is dead.



I bought my truck for 37k, and I may lose 10k on the transaction.

I never bought a brand new vehicle before. This was my first and last time. It’s such a huge financial hit. What a mistake.

 

Yeah. Like I wasn't about to get a new Ram or a Jeep anyways, but I figured it can't hurt to ask esp if they're reaching out making offers.

 

It's only a massive financial hit if you sell it. And that's true of all new vehicles, regardless of transmission choice.

As mentioned in here before, private sale will still net you a good chunk of change.

The trade in value they gave you isn’t really shocking TBH. It’s right about what I would’ve guessed selling a 3 year old truck to a dealer. They gotta make some money on their investment too... If it was $35K new, then yeah, they’ll probably sell it for about $31K-ish and make $4K on it, less their expenses of paying their staff to sell it, their mechanic going thru it and fixing anything it may or may not need, cleaning it up, etc... If it were any other brand it would've depreciated much more.

I just bought a ‘21 TRD OR and I sold a ‘13 Outback and a ‘06 Tundra in 2 days... both from just mentioning that I was going to sell them on a facebook post about my new Taco. Never even had to list them for sale, just word of mouth between friends. You will sell your Taco super fast on your own and make several grand more.

 

I was curious about 4 weeks ago and put my truck into Carvana and got $31,5k. I strongly considered it, but still love my tacoma and want to have the utility of a truck/bed combo. It's a little tight with 2 car seats in the back, but we make it work...I think your mods are killing your resale, not the M/T aspect.

Edit: FYI i have 31k miles on it, no mods except ditch lights and rock sliders, all which can easily be taken off

 

Used GX's in my area tend to sell for less compared to 4Runners. I think the rear air suspension turns people off, did for me. Sort of like KDSS and the older XREAS 4Runner suspension. When it wears out dealer parts are $4k, aftermarket suspension to replace it is $2k.

 

I sold my 08 DCSB OR 6MT on here back in 2016. I found, with an enthusiasts forum, I had more knowledgeable interested parties, who didn’t try to negotiate before actually showing up to look at, and test drive the vehicle. The third person who looked, bought it. Took about a week. Kijiji on the other hand, I had messages asking if I’d take some lowball offer, without a single question being asked, or showing up for a viewing. My favorites were the ones that would just tell me, “I’ll give you this much.” My reply is always, “sure, and I’ll hang on to the vehicle while you come up with the several other thousand I’m asking.”

Anyways, long way of saying, give the forum a chance. Things may have changed since I sold mine, but I think you have a better chance of finding a serious, interested buyer on here, who won’t try to dick you around.

 

I've learned over the years there is a technique selling on Craigslist. Don't try to oversell with a long opening paragraph. Opening sentence is year, miles, trim. Don't use runon sentences. Use bullet points for the highlights, don't run it all together sentence after sentence.

A well crafted concise Craigslist ad with pics gets hits, and I've made it phone calls only.

 

Pretty much this. They're a business out to make a profit. And everything is negotiable. That's not something you see often anymore in the US. The days where you could knock 30% off the sticker price may be gone (if those were ever a thing), but there's still more flexibility in a dealership than there is in electronics, appliances, or aftermarket truck parts.

I agree, but would still suggest OP temper expectations. Again, speaking personally, I am trying to purchase an MT but, knowing only what OP described in the first post, I wouldn't pay over $30k for it, because for just $5k more, I can get exactly what I want brand new with a full warranty, better financing, hell, a host of reasons. I don't represent everyone, but I'm a potential interested party.

Definitely agree with this. A friend sold a bike on Craigslist - I forget what exactly - but someone from the other side of the states was looking for it, called him, made the deal and paid to have it shipped. People use Craigslist to find deals. The thing is, it has to be a deal that's worth taking to them. Bullet points detailing exactly what's going on from dealer packages to aftermarket items. Your truck may be the perfect build to someone out there.

 

I just sold the vehicle. Seeing someone else drive away in my truck. Made me a little emotional.
