Guys I’m in a little bit indecisive on this . Some honest inputs would really help here.

I inherited some monies from my folks and made a couple bucks from the stock market. I’m not well off but I’m comfortable financially. I’m currently driving a 3rd Gen Tacoma and despite people thinking it’s inferior mechanically. It’s has been good to me. But here is the thing, I always wanted a 4runner. Especially the limited nightshade. I just not feeling the front design of a Pro and I don’t even off-road to use all those extras.

You might ask why not just trade in the Turd Gen and get a 4R. Thing is the Tacoma is far more useful for me currently and I’m planning to keep it until I see holes thru the body.

I want to buy the 2021 or possibly the 2022, whichever the last year model before Toyota fuck it up with the 6th Gen. Buy it cash, take it to some pro shop to have it prepped for long term storage and park it in my garage. Once my Taco bites the dust. I break out the cover and drive the 4runner. I’m talking may be 20 years from now (if I didn’t get hit by a bus or died of cancer by 2040.)

what do you guys say. Stupid? Ingenious? I can’t make my mind up. I do want to wait and see what the next Gen have to offer but I somehow feel the 5th Gen is as good get as it gets (unless the 6th Gen came out kicking asses taking names then I’ll wait another 12 years) I don’t care much for all the fancy shits like the Explorers. I like it old style and simple.

I wouldn’t do it. If I buy something, I wouldn’t want it just sitting around for mice to make a home in. Plus in 20 years, I’d have found something new I’d want instead.

We have both a 2017 Tacoma and a 2019 4Runner. They're both solid vehicles and we love them both. We do use the Tacoma far more though. I believe the 4Runner has 9k miles on it since December and the Tacoma has 17k on it since April.

Sure does. I can throw it back in the market and will be better off in 20 years. And then my daughter will spend it on shoes or worse, buys her boyfriend a 5th Gen when I can’t even walk anymore.

If you don’t plan on driving it for 20 years put the money back into stocks for 20 or so years and buy a low miles cherry 20 yr old 4Runner with the dividends from the stock and still probably have all of your initial investment and then some. Also don’t have to worry about storing and insurance on a vehicle you never drive

If you want it buy it. But drive it. It’s much better suited to be driven than to just sit around.

Also if your in a bind and need access to some cheddar you can sell a few stocks. With the 4runner you have to sell the whole thing.

Great idea, if it made sense. There are a lot of things that I want and can afford to get, but on a practical level, they just doesn't hold water. With the way tech is going and pollution laws, what if that 4runner isn't legal for road use 20 years from now?

This is a terrible idea. You wanna spend 40k on a depreciating asset and park it indefinitely?

That’s when a 5th Gen 4runner made all the senses. Everything went electrified and people drinking beers and watching porn on their way to work. Dropping their jaws to see a good sweet 4runner. I would snap my neck now if I see an prime FJ45 on the road

    Interesting...
And a bit foolish - but Its your money!
I have a car that I've driven less that 12,000 miles in the last 20 years... - So I guess I understand.

Don't forget that by the time you get to it, many ear items will need to be replaced... and you'll need to allocate some $ for higher maintenance as you go along. Cars do not do well sitting around...

I'd wait for the Electric 4 Runner!

In any case, any vehicle will do much better if you drive it occasionally - surely you'll want to enjoy it a bit before the cancer hits, or the bus finds you! :D:eek:

Have anyone wondered if you’ve bought a Defender when it was only $30k in 1997. Those are going for $100k possibly more for a low mile D90.

I’ve get it. Cars are terrible investments and 4runners aren’t Defenders. I mean shit even the Gwagon which is far superior than the Defenders couldn’t hold a candle to its value. But is there a chance I’d have my cake and eat it too? Would the 5th Gen appreciate?

Leaving a vehicle to sit for 20 years is not good. You won’t be able to gas it up and drive away. Seals dry out, stuff gets seized. A vehicle is not a sound “investment”. Put the money away and let it grow

Sure, could be worth 100k in 20 years. New one might cost 150k. I can’t predict the future. Putting 5k miles a year on it won’t change the math. If you want it, just drive it.
    Are we done here?
