I do a lot of highway driving for my commute to work. I’m close to 16k km and I’m about to do my 2nd oil change.
That being said, I’ve only had my 2020 for 5 months and I feel like changing the oil every 2 and half months is too frequent?
I’m basically just following the manual changing it every 8k, but can I push it further than 8k if all I’m doing is highway driving?

Change mine every 3k miles. Don’t plan on using the dealership. Definitely overkill but oil is pretty cheap

Changing around 5-10k probably won’t make much of a difference in the long run

I just bought 2 55 gal drums, filled one with 10-20W and threw some zinc pellets in the empty one. Then got a fumoto valve and just do a quick change every Sunday, used oil goes into the empty one and after a few months the empty barrel is full and the full is empty. Throw some zinc pellets into the new empty one, and rise/repeat. Should be good enough for the life of the truck. All the crud just sinks to the bottom. And the pellets help with corrosion.

Also, I don't do this. Please don't do this.

I did the first oil change on my 2018 at 1,000 miles. I had tiny metal flakes on the dipstick and quite a bit in my filter and housing. It was strange since my parents have a 2018 Camry with the same 2GR that never had any visible flakes on the dipstick or in the filter housing/element. I definitely wouldn’t wait till 10k.

I always do oil changes every 6 months thereafter, which is around 3k miles for me. I use Napa synthetic which is cheap when it goes on sale. Gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling peeking inside the oil filler caps on my 2008 and 2010. Looks like new metal in there - no varnish.

I did the first at 1,000k (End of Feb 2019). After the first year, did 5k service (barely past 5k miles. They did the sensor recall at this time. No oil change because they recognized the change at 1k, but I brought it my mechanic a month later -Feb 2020- for the oil change, at this point it was one year since the previous oil change). In September, brought it in for service and they did an oil change along with the fuel pump recall while it was in. About 7k miles now. With COVID restrictions, mileage driven has went down quite a bit and the Tacoma is not a daily driver to begin with. Last of the two year service will be January.

I do mine around the first 500 to get the break-in materials out and to check things out underneath and Fluid Film.

    Then 5k after that.

However, the answer also depends on how long you're keeping it. Let's be honest, if you're like most Americans, you will trade the vehicle in long before oil change intervals matter. So for the average driver, 10k or even longer is fine as the motor will run 100k easily under any regimen.

To answer your question, all 0W-20 is synthetic so yes, synthetic is used at the factory.

I've changed my oil and filter 3 times (every 5000 miles or so). I've had the truck 4 and a half years and put on 15,000 miles. Living so wrong.

6000 kilometers, around there...ofcourse synthetic. Up here is Alberta the weather conditions can be nasty...I tend to keep my vehicles very long time. So it's that and also I must mention...ethanol free gasoline!

I've done 10,000 mile oil changes for over 20 years on multiple vehicles. No issues at all. Every vehicle on the driveway has over 100,000 miles on it, 209,000 on the Tacoma. There have been multiple guys post here with 400,000+ miles and 10,000 mile oil changes. There is a guy in NC with about 1.5 million miles on his Tacoma that used 8,000-10,000 mile changes. He doesn't keep up with miles, just changes once/month. That is how much he drives every month.

All 0/20 is synthetic. Buy what you want. They're all good....including all the Warren sisters, SuperTech, Kirkland, Amazon Basics, Meijer, Harvest King.

And please.....for the sake of all that is good in this world, shut this thread down now. It's just going to turn into a shit-show like every oil thread does....including the 167 oil threads that have popped up this week alone.

I agree, especially with the engine break-in. I bought a six-pack of Toyota filters and doing mine 'sooner than needed' but that's OK.
I'm at 2.3K on my rig now and I plan on doing my own at 2.5K ... Hey, I'll let Toyota do all my freebie oil/filter changes as they'll give me, but even with the full-synth oil and top-shelf filters ... 10K just doesn't set right with me. (Old dogs, new tricks, y'know) I'll do mine every 5K, after awhile and between dealer maint.
A $40.00 oil/filter change on yer own, buys a lot of peace-of-mind and I've never once heard anyone say 'Man, I really shouldn't have changed my oil and filter too often..' ;)

Who wants a Tacoma with 400k miles, that burns oil and has low compression? Change your oil every 6k miles, and your engine will be in like new condition at 400k miles.
