The whole thing is wrong. They remove roads to keep it natural, then talk about paving mosaic? They can only go so far, once the road goes into the wash it would be destroyed when the rains come. I like the soft sand roads, keeps the tourists out.

 

The advantage of a paved road in a popular place cannot be under estimated.

The former was pretty much the itinerary for my first DV trip--Hidden Valley to Racetrack to Saline Valley, via South Pass from Lee Flat. Entering the park via Cerro Gordo the day before. I can recommend this route in dry weather!

Yes. And a related point: don't let an unrealistic itinerary push you to drive recklessly fast on unfamiliar roads. Nobody needs extra excuses to make bad decisions, and it is so very easy and tempting to drive wayyyy too fast out there!

 

I glad I'm not the only one that would be pissed to see another landing strip disappear from the American Southwest.

The whole entire park is already a night sky viewing area. It's literally the largest park in the contiguous US. A Connecticut sized swath if remote desert with immaculate night skies in every direction.

And they want to bulldoze one of the, what, three lightly used landing strips in the whole park? While literally paving the way for idiot motorists to ruin more of the park even faster than before?

That's some Richard Daley level bullshit.

Made a last minute decision to hop in the park while we were hot springing in central Nevada. Going to camp outside of Beatty tonight. What are some cool spots to check out if you only got 2.5 days? Plan on going back to reno on 395 and hitting some more springs on the way back...

I wish they would reopen Surprise canyon to off road vehicles . Climbing those 7 waterfalls in a trail capable vehicle was awesome . I took my jeep up the canyon twice in 1992 and 1994

 

go Titus Ubehebe Racetrack camp on Homestake, Lippincott Saline Valley out to Bishop. Not enough days to go Steel Eureka Dunes. springs in Saline are dried up due to Covid issues

 

I submitted my comments.

I am a member of several astronomy clubs and a place for dark sky events would be awesome. But there's no need to destroy the existing strip to provide something that's really only useful some of the time and would be better served at a higher elevation in the park due to lights from the highway or even dust from windstorms in the valley. If no different location could be found, the airstrip could be closed via NOTAMs for the duration of the event. No need to destroy it. I do honestly favor keeping the strip and feel like it offers a unique opportunity not available in other parks.

The other thing I commented on is Mosaic Canyon. The area needs a proper parking area and some vault toilets/trash receptacles. Otherwise, I don't support the paving of the road without understanding the impact to the area. For example, a better road results in more visitors and with visitors come trash and damage associated with increased numbers.

I made a joke about the change in status from Monument to Park and I honestly believe National Park status can have unintended consequences on places. At DV, I've noticed the increase in visitation and damage to of some of the park's most unique features-some unintentional and some not so.

I ran Titus canyon twice. During my trip. It’s beautiful in different daylight hours.

 

Very rude to camp that close at Geology cabin when there's plenty of space nearby. Jeepers... of course

 

Unfortunately it's not just Jeepers.
I was at Eureka Dunes on Wednesday and watched a 3rd Gen and Lexus blow through the camping area and dust everybody there. Folks were standing ten feet from the road and these clowns blasted through like they were on a rally course.
I passed them a few miles up the road and got a good look at the 3rd gen as I scowled at them. If I see a pic of it on the forum I may drop a subtle hint or two.
