Hey all, I was looking into getting those hood struts but always been hesitant drilling holes. I was checking under the hood to see if maybe Toyota had plans to include them, and maybe had holes ready for it. There are some threaded holes close to where the aftermarket struts wants you to drill holes, both in the hood and in the fender.

I think it was the 4runner that had a single contact point on each end of the strut. The aftermarket wants two holes drilled out. I have attached a few photos of the holes I'm referring to. Anyone know what those holes are intended for, and could they be used for struts? Might be able to buy 4runner struts for it?

The holes are good ground points and also used to mount brackets for accessories like an additional fuse box for all your lighting accessories.

They make an excellent attachment point for an oil catch can with a simple piece of aluminum as a bracket.

What does an oil catch can do for your truck?

Direct injection vehicles benefit from a catch can. Tacoma’s are dual port and direct injection. To my understanding, when an engine is tuned as mine is (OVTune), port injection is slightly ‘reduced’ while direct is used more.

The truck would be fine without the catch can, it just keeps the intake manifold a bit cleaner which should keep the engine’s performance from waning as would at the normal rate as it accumulates mileage.

But yeah, those bolt holes are in an excellent spot for a can install

To all: if you’re thinking about it, please spare us the tired old ‘catch can’s are snake oil’ argument here.
    There’s another thread for that.

crank case pressure is vented to the valve cover, an oil catch can catches any oil that comes with this air flow so it doesn't build up/gunk up on the valves/intake

even my 93 2.2L honda benefited from one

The Sokie Tech struts mentioned above use these holes. No drilling needed.

Faster and neater than other struts.

I appreciate all the replies on this. Yeah I have the Sokietech struts on my list. I like them, but for some reason with how low they attach to the hood seems off to me. Like a leverage thing, I feel like any semi strong wind gust is going to cause it to slam down. I doubt they'd sell it if there was any kind of liability like that, maybe its just a visual trick on my eyes.

I have a set of these. They use the ground point by the battery, you replace the bolt with a bolt in the kit.
The right side has a similar hole as well but nothing is there from the factory.
They are decent hood struts. They lift higher than the prop rod.

Installed my SokieTech struts this afternoon. They work perfectly--for me anyway. Couldn't be happier with the product. Ten minute installation.

Using mine for an Overland Equipped aux power bus as I begin adding goodies so I don't wind up with a rat's nest of wiring over time. Bus and light bar wiring harness went in last weekend, light bar goes in tomorrow.
