Hope this is the right thread. Wondering if there is feedback to whether a basket or flat roof rack offers more use.
I want to eventually add an awning and maybe a roof top light bar. Also like the idea of throwing tubs up there during camping trips.
A flat rack scares me, but everyone is running them.

Basket for the add on's. Reason is there is more area to mount "mounting plates" and brackets. The very cool, low profile flats look really good but don't offer the mounting area for a awning or other heavier gear.
    Just my .27 cents.

I'd disagree entirely. A flat rack with t-slots offers a ton of options to easily mount an awning as well as tie down points to strap down heavier things or to just drop a basket on top of you have a bunch of smaller hard to tie down stuff. If you have a basket and want to carry skis, lumber, a kayak or anything else that doesn't fit inside the basket you're left with a ungainly load with a bunch of straps everywhere hoping it works.

And that's what the OP will have to decide. I can strap skis or a snowmobile to mine without breaking a sweat, or if needed, fabricate anything else to launch missiles..lol

I never really thought about it that way. I was pretty much convinced on a basket, but now will have to reconsider. I did feel like a basket made securing items easier since is has the sides that come up.

You can really put a snowmobile up there?

Sure, and a entire "Ski School" of skis...Ahahahahahaha. Seriously about 300 lbs if I had to. That's a old pic, I have a solar panel up there now but anything is possible. You have to do the research, plan and attack it. Just because it's not on the end of a credit card slip don't mean shit. Make it. LOL
