TSB-0092-20 is awesome!

Hey everyone, I bought my 2019 TRD Sport DCSB 4WD back in April of this year and have been a lurker in the forums since then. I've always had issues with the gear hunting at highway speeds especially when there is a slight incline on the road going about 65-70mph. I read about the TSB that recently came out that applied to the 2019 Tacomas and decided to take my truck to the dealer to see if they would perform the TSB.

As expected, they said they could not replicate the issue. However, they did say they would perform the TSB reflash as a courtesy gesture. I picked up the truck on Tuesday, and it is literally a night and day difference. The best way to describe it is an in-between from the factory tune and ECT mode. The pedal is more responsive, I don't have to near floor it to have it downshift for power when needed, and it stays in gears longer instead of constant searching. It's probably too soon to comment on MPGs, but I'm not seeing much of a difference than before, maybe a 0.5 MPG less. My truck was getting 23-25 MPG highway and about 20-21 overall, for reference (all stock except for speakers and A/C drain mod).

I highly recommend people to get this TSB done! Even if you have to pay for it, it's definitely worth it and would be cheaper than the OV tune (I believe it was 0.5 hours of labor only).

It should be 04B33.

 

Yes, I am now at 04B3300. I'm not sure what I was at before, but I had a late model 2019 made in August of 2019. I was probably at 04B3200 before.

 

Did the same thing to my OR 2019. From 04B31 to 04B33. Did the tsb myself. Truck is running and driving the best it ever has. Hate to say it but it is better than any tune I have added. Can’t say enough how much better it is now!

 

i need to suck it up, and learn how to get techstream, and do the tsb update to 04b33... knowing there is no 2.0 tune at this time from OV tune. having a hard time dropping the ov tune 2.0 with my current 04B31 ecu status BUT, I CANT STAND THE GEAR HUNTING OVER 65MPH, EVEN ON FLAT GROUND. it is the ONLY THING I DISLIKE ABOUT THE TRUCK! I had my truck OV tuned, the guy that did it had tech stream and did the TSB before he tuned it. No more gear hunting, truck drives great now.

 

I now have over 500 miles on it. I live in the mountains. City,highway, even some flat land miles.Adaptive cruise is better. Not perfect but much better. I was so close to finding something different because the way it drove. Not now! This is how the damn thing should have been from the beginning.

 

There's another thread up on this, but the general consensus is that this TSB is amazing.

My only downside is that my fuel mileage has taken a hit since the tsb, you have to baby the throttle if you want to go for mileage..

 

After driving to my parents today on a 55 mile trip one way on I-95, I was getting an average of 24.5 mpg on the way there and 24 mpg on the way back. For winter blend fuel, I can't complain. The truck now seems to like cruising around 70-75 mph now to get the mpg. Before the flash, I had to baby it around 55-65 in order to get good mpg.

I honestly think my mpg may be better than before... and at a higher cruising speed now. Not sure about the city mileage though.

 

My 19 was built 12/18. I am going to see if the dealer will perform this TSB while it is in for the fuel pump replacement.

 

I have my truck tuned so I haven't updated the ecu ID. What tune did you have that isn't as good as the new TSB?

 

Do not want to bash anyone. The one that is on this forum. The tune did help but it was not perfect especially because I am in the mountains. The transmission did not shift right still.

Now after the tsb 04B33 my truck likes to cruise at higher speeds with no effort. I do mostly highway miles because I live in a small town. I am averaging 22.3 mpg. Bone stock. They must have turned torque management up on everything. Pulls off line better ,passes better ,runs down highway at faster speeds better,shifts better,holds lower gear longer going up mountain roads. I used to turn on ect all the time. I do not turn it on anymore. My wife even noticed it and she could give a rats ass how my truck drives. She has a Subaru Crosstrek with the variable transmission and that car drives awesome in the mountains!

 

I was on the OV tunes for 04B31 since they came out. Indeed a drastic improvement over the stock tune. When this TSB dropped, I stared at it for a couple days then couldn’t resist any longer. I knew I would lose access to all the tunes I had acquired but knowing that Toyota has full access to all ECU programming ( adaptive CC for example) I fired up techstream and flashed it, thinking I would be happy to wait for Mat to catch up with an 04B33 tune pack. Well, I think there’s a whole bunch of OV influence in this TSB. It’s damn good! I was shocked to say the least. I still did a few edits in vf tuner for tip-in and 4-5 and 5-6 upshifts and downshifts but fairly minor.
It baffles me how badly they neutered this engine/tranny in the name of economy. I get way better mileage on this calibration and every OV tune I had tried up to this point.
This TSB is truly impressive. Don’t hesitate.

Here is the actual TSB document. In order to do this yourself, you need the Techstream software, the ECU flash file, and a J2534 OpenPort2.0 Cable (Tactrix recommended). There is another thread somewhere that has all the ECU files and instructions on how to use Techstream. I just let the dealer do it since I'm still under warranty.

Yes. I was running OVtune 2.0 Beta Premium 04b30 and flashed the new 04b33. 2.0 was so much better than stock tune, but I took the plunge and did it yesterday. Love 04b33. I do have VF tuner so I can tweak from this point or wait on tune packs from Mat. I put 90 miles on the interstate today at speeds between 75 and 80 and only downshifted once to 4th. And the transmission wants to go into the 1st overdrive. No more mashing the throttle and letting up to get it upshift.

 

When did this TSB come out? I got my truck flashed today with OVTune and he said I was up to date with TSBs before he loaded the tune.

 

I believe it was official by Toyota as of September 17th, 2020.
