How well does the Adaptive Cruise Control work?

if it starts braking from above 25, it won’t just shutoff when it gets below 25. It will continue to brake (again, I’ve tested this multiple times) all the way to a complete stop if need be. If it slows you to below 25 and then traffic speeds up a little so it stops braking at all, then yea it shuts off.

 

Honestly, my cruise control with this transmission is hit or miss. It'll either hunt for gears or hang onto a gear WAY too long imo.

If I'm ever using it and approach a hill, I just turn it off and use my foot to manage what gear I want it to be in depending on the speed.

Maybe I know less than the truck knows, but I feel like it's consuming significantly more fuel with the truck guessing what to do; compared to me deciding what it should do.

 

The Cruise Control isn't stopping the car below 25 mph, the TSS is, and generally its going crazy with beeps when it does.

 

No it doesn’t. It continues braking like regular ACC without beeping. But it will cancel as soon as it stops breaking.

 

I usually hate CC - in fact I have rarely ever used it in the past (I'm 58) and the only vehicle we own that I use it on now is my Tacoma. I have a long commute - 120 miles round trip to my main office and I work 7 days most weeks. I use CC constantly on my commute - but I will say, I'm very remote and often I may not see 50 cars on my roundtrip commute. The times I've used it in traffic (never rush hour type) it has been in cities like : Winston Salem, NC, Birmingham, AL, Nashville, TN, Chattanooga, TN, Knoxville, TN, etc. If the traffic is flowing - 55-65 MPH I find it good. However if it is during peak times I will not use it, as the adaptive part will hit the brakes as folks cut in front/change lanes. Overall I love it - and I put about 40-45K miles per year on my main vehicle ( which this truck is).

 

One thing I do really hate about the Toyota ACC is if you come up on a vehicle going slower than you, it will detect it a ways out, and rather than gradually slowing down to match their speed, it will let you go full speed up to the distance you've set (there's three settings) and then hit the brakes. It can be abrupt.

 

On the interstate where I use adaptive cruise, my truck has never hit the brakes if the car ahead is just going slower and not hitting their brakes for an exit, all it does is let off the gas. I do agree it can be rather abrupt and would be better if it were more gradual and the same can be said for when you go around a slower car, a more gradual acceleration would be better.
I think their are 3 levels of sensitivity settings, with it set on max sensitivity mine slows down well ahead and doesn’t run up on the car.

Normally, my thought is 'The more gizmo's .. The more stuff to break later on ... And cost me $$ ..'
Had I never had it .. I probably would have been just fine. But now that I do have it? I absolutely love it and wouldn't consider buying another new rig without it.
I've always loved cruise-control even in it's most primitive form (My first was on an 84' Bronco) and it's just gotten better and better ..
But the 'adaptive' ones? It's a giant leap. Just love it. I can't say for other auto mfg's, but I think Toyota got this just right.

 

Yeah, that is one of the things that I hated about the radar cruise. Especially since I had a little itty-bitty 4 cylinder and it would scream to red line trying to get back up to speed.

 

I agree with so far as the 'smoothness' of operation .. A lot of times I don't even notice if my truck is slowing down a bit to keep the pre-set distance, or speeding up after the gap has been made up.
I've only had an abrupt braking a couple times, but that was because of someone making a left turn and they're like 1/2 way in the driving lane and 1/2 way in the left-hand turn lane. (We've all been there..)
I actually find it to work quite well ... Although I gotta say, where I live, congested rush-hour type of traffic doesn't exist .. So maybe if it did .. I might not love it as much.

 

I haven't had this happen ... I've got the 2.7 and the worst that's happened is it will drop two-three gears and while the engine winds up .. Nothing anywhere near red-lining ... IDK .. mines a 2020 ... So maybe the computer has been programmed differently? No idea.

 

I know it feels like a 15 year old is driving my truck when the CC is on. Someone pulls in front, it jams on the brakes, then they leave the lane and it floors the throttle to get back up to speed. I got the 4 banger, so I assume its just the lack of power. I haven't driven a V6.

What I want to know is if the truck feels like its being driven like a 15 year old boy when it has the V6.

 

It's similar with my 2020 V6.

 

I think that's the only thing about my taco I don't like. I would much prefer that CC get on the throttle gradually so the transmission never shifts down in CC.

I wonder if we can have this reprogramed to be less spastic.

 

It has three distance adjustments. Unless I'm on a long trip with a chance to get sleepy, I hold it down for 3 seconds and just use the normal cruise control. When using adaptive I use the shortest distance.

 

It took me a while to get used to it, but I like now. Like others, I only use cruise control in light traffic and turn it off in heavier traffic. The PCS still confuses me, but it has worked a couple of times.

One odd thing about the adaptive system is if you're on a sharp curve it seems to sense signs and other objects on the edge of the road and apply the brakes.

My SR5 has the PCS, LDA, and automatic high beams, but doesn't have the blind spot sensors. I think that's just a bit weird.

 

I used the normal cc more often at first, but now I'm liking adaptive better. I pick the shortest setting.

 

yes you can run cruise control without the adaptive thing

 

You can adjust the gap but I usually turn the adapted part off. Still it could keep you from running into someone if you get distracted. YMMV
