    Question for y'all...

Friend recommended getting my CV axels from https://www.cvjreman.com/ Looks like it's gonna be in the neighborhood of $900.

Is this what I should be expecting?
Those that have swapped, did you spend that much?
Another source I can go to?

    Shit, why so much?

Only costly axles are RCV's and they're nearly $2k for both.

Otherwise, just get some OEM reman's from Toyota. Shop around online and you'll find a better deal at one place than another.

Providing a used set (can be found on the forums, marketplace, junk yard, etc) will provide you that core charge.

Yeah that's way too much for reman CV axles. Hell you can get a pair of brand new OEM ones for less than that.

CVJ remans should be around $400 or so for a basic rebuilt pair... Where is the $900 from? Last I checked they were about 200 each with the normal boots

That price is pretty high... but i guess if you went with their "Best" and had to pay the core charge, then $900 is about right. I had just emailed them on 11/02/2020 on these. They don't have the manual hub CVs listed in their store yet for some reason (they have a link for it for "Tacoma w/o ADD", but click the link and it goes to "coming soon"). Send them an email or call them and they'll get you straight. They have the "good, better, best" options and they ranged from $170+core to $306+core, depending on how hardcore you wanted to go. (The only thing that really changes on them is the boots--otherwise, its all the same OEM reman CV.)

This is from the email they sent me:

Honestly Id just get some remans from local auto parts store with lifetime replacement and then do the "boot mod" you could finish your parts lists for $900 easily Lol

1996-2000 J Shift transfer case; careful not to buy a multimode which is basically a J Shift with push button (only in 98-00 anyway).

They didn't offer the 3rd Gen with manual hubs as they were all equipped with the identical ADD setup available on 1st gen Tacoma's.

    No, why?

You must have missed my post.

Although if those aren't on a 2nd Gen 4Runner, you're looking at a Toyota Pickup

    1st Gen Tacoma hubs.

You are in front of a 2nd Gen 4runner or Toyota Pickup (before Tacoma existed).

1995.5 and up is what you seek.

But as I mentioned earlier in your thread, and others, what is wrong with a new set?

Information is being repeated to you a lot in here -

Main reason I’m trying not to get a new set is the price

You were considering $900 axles when many of us told you to buy OEM remans from Toyota several times prior.

A pair of new hubs will only run you 240-250 versus maybe 120-150 and needing a rebuild.

Yes, I am a hypocrite. Trying to juggle life and this project makes me forget lots of things. So I appreciate y’all’s patience.

Where are you able to find hubs for that much? I only saw that kit that was $1,400

    Lol.......

Low range off road, even Rock Auto.

Aisin hubs for 1st Generation Tacomas are a widely available part.

Ignore whatever "conversion" kits you find. You are not converting from one setup to another; you are simply adding 4x4 to your non 4x4.

If however, you opted to buy a used set of hubs, and want to rebuild them to save a few dollars, you can.

They disassemble and assemble again all within minutes.

You'll just want to get a good parts cleaner to remove all the residue and grease, as well as the old worn paint on them. You'll also want to measure for excessive wear on the hub clutch.

My hub bodys and dials are grey because I got the outer surface sand blasted.

Here are some pics I took when I was bored -

    Update:
After a long day of finding nothing at yards I went to this private junk yard that I learned about through @mtb_taco This place is a good mine of old yota's. They have tons of old 4Runners and Tacomas out there, some running, some for parts, and some in between. The owner even showed us a 2003 taco where the engine only had 800 miles on it (so he claimed).

    2211AD30-A254-44F4-BFC6-51F838D46FB7.jpg

With that being said, I am getting the hubs, cv axels, and all the associated assembly for a great deal ($250). The plan is to take the hubs apart and clean them up. I want to paint them like @Kwikvette did with his. They are currently the grey Aisin. Here is the loaner truck for those interested. I believe it was a 98.' Picking up the parts Sunday morning.

Huge shoutout to @Kwikvette for helping me and answering questions as I was out there! And of course to @mtb_taco for the plug and helping me locate the proper loaner taco!

    Hell of a deal!

    Glad to be of help.

While you're at home, I'd order up 2 o rings and 2 gaskets for your manual hubs. May as well buy 2 detent ball kits just in case you lose one. All can be ordered from Low Range.

You'll need them for when you disassemble and rebuild your hubs.

Plenty of videos on manual hubs but if you need help just tag me.

You read my mind, I was going to ask what rots away and needs to be swapped. Looking forward to taking them apart and getting them cleaned up and looking fresh.

    Thanks!
