Trac off and check engine light on dash!

I have not been having any driving issues with the truck at all. Drove it about 60 + miles
on Friday with no issues or CEL. Today I washed the truck and when I went to start it
the Trac off and check engine lights displayed. I thought it might have something to do
with it just being washed but never did anything like that before.

Driving wise it seems to be limited. Like the engine does not want to rev above 2000
rpms. Would this be a limp home mode ?

Trac off = Traction control turned off ? For what reason I don't know

I did purchase a code reader and plan to check for codes tomorrow and will post
the results.

if anybody has any idea what could be the culprit here please post up.

is that the air pump you hear when you are on a cold start up ?

 

Ya, the 2012s had big issues with them, and it the valve that controls the flow are stuck open the truck can often run in limp mode.

This could also be a fuel pump starving and the code would then be a lean code.

 

I do have a after market high flow filter air box, and did the relocation of the air pump
next to the radiator about 6 months ago with the small round filter mod.
Could the valves in the pump be unstuck with a tap on the case ?

And what about the Trac off displayed- Could a spray of water foul something
or is this some hard part in the brakes failing ?

 

Toyota's will disable traction/stability control with any CEL even it has nothing to do with those systems. As far as knowing what code you have is anybody's guess until you scan it.

 

I see, I did not know that. Thanks. I will be looking at the code or codes tomorrow. I bet the air pump is the culprit and the TRAC OFF is along for the
ride because the CEL is on. Go figure ! Is there some sort of upgrade as opposed to installing a same model year inferior pump ?

 

OK, Here are the codes I got from the data link :

P2440 = This code is not listed in my Haynes service manual
P2442 = Evap emissions control small leak detected
P2440 PD Pending = What do these 2 mean ?

I went through the erase procedure and started the truck and ran the engine for several minutes without
any check engine light returning. I did in fact here the secondary air control operate as it normally would
for the normal 20 to 30 seconds.
Is it possible the small leak detected could be in one of the rubber hose connections ?

I'm also seeing the code P2440 indicates that bank 1 switching valve is stuck open.
I see this assembly is pretty expensive to replace. Are there any work arounds
to try to unstick the valve ?

 

How many miles do you have on your truck?
If it’s less that 150,000 you may qualify for a replacement by Toyota.

Sound to me like you should call your local Toyota Dealer ship and have them inspected the truck.
If it is the SAIS, you should fall into the criteria for a replacement.

It says 10 years from date of first use.
It’s not even 2021 yet, and you don’t have 150k on the truck.

I had just purchased this truck in April of 2020. it had 80 k on it then. Have had zero
running issues with it. Even just recently drove fine with no issues.
It was after I washed it that it set the codes. Since the read this morning I have
run the truck twice with out any codes or CEL.

So I need to monitor it .

 

Isn’t there some deal that the dealer won’t touch it if there’s an aftermarket filter on the air pump?

 

I think I might have the plastic one sill but will have to look for it .

So you read the codes. Did you clear them too?

Most codes take x keystarts of seeing the fault to set the code. The pending ones you saw were 'in progress' of counting key starts.

You might read it now and find those original codes already pending. Clearing them took you out of limp mode, but it didn't fix the problem.

If the pending codes are already there, take some friendly advice. Put the air system back to stock, call the dealer, make an appointment.

 

Yes all the codes were cleared. it showed there were 4 total.
