Good thing it's still warm in Fargo

 

I don't have any bushes and I don't think my neighbors would like me using theirs.

Down side, I can't write my name in the snow.

It wasn't that bad. And while my boys and I might be alright with that, I can say without hesitation that my wife would not.

The problem started a few weeks ago when one of my toilets wouldn't stop running. An adjustment to the float helped for a few days then it started acting up again. I had my son pick up a new float assembly then when I went to change it out, I discovered that the water shut off wasn't shutting off the water. You have one job to do!

After picking up a replacement shut off valve, I drained the house down, changed out the valve, replaced the float and all was good again.

Until earlier this week when I heard that the toilet in my sons' bathroom was running, too. I went to check their shut off and it wasn't working, either. Sensing an obvious trend, I decided that if I was going to kill the water to the house, I might as well do their toilet, mine and the one downstairs. It only took me about 3 hours all in, which wasn't so bad, it's just the annoyance of having to replace plumbing in an 8 year old house.

I'm not looking forward to needing to turn water off to a sink (I have 9 in the house...) only to find those valves aren't working, either.

 

That sucks. Never an easy job is it?
My plumber told me to use the shut offs at least once a quarter so they don’t seize. Including the main for the house. So I do that know. Maybe start cycling them?

 

I'll try to remember to give them a turn once in a while.

I talked to a plumber and he recommended since I needed to switch them out anyway to replace the multi turn valves with a 1/4 turn. If these last another 7 years, I'll likely be out of the house by then since the boys will be... holy crap, 23 and 21.

 

I need to replace both valves that our washing machine is hooked to. I always remember it about every two months when I have to cut them off and clean the filters on the back of the washer. Our water is well and has a little sand in it.

Took me a few tries to get the cold to quit leaking when I turned it back on the other day. I’ve tried to tighten it where it’s leaking on the stem but it won’t budge.

 

Let me ask, why is this poll difficult for you?

 

Some of it comes from my tendency to overthink things that aren't intended to be overthunk.

Quick back story - my youngest has Cystic Fibrosis. So far, all things considered, he's been doing great with it.

That would be the start of why I asked if this applied only to me or immediate family - If it applied to them, too, the decision would be pretty easy as #1 is immediately off the table. Toss up between #2 and 3 but leaning towards 3 as I'd take "care free" to mean relatively healthy with the overriding factor of being poor isn't any fun. My wife's and my families didn't have a lot (for her it was sometimes only just enough to get by) so she's made it a priority to not need to be dependent on anyone in regards to income.

Since you said the poll would only apply to me, #1 would now be a viable consideration as I'd happily take the hit in the health department to leave them in a better financial situation than I was. Number 2 is now off the table as my health would be secondary to being able to provide my son the medications he needs, which are far from inexpensive, even with good insurance.

All told while I'm typing this, gun to my head I'd pick #1, provided the money is used as I'd want it to be.

 

Wow. What a perspective changer for me.

First, sorry your son has cystic fibrosis. I can’t imagine. You’re a good man thinking of them above yourself.

My wife and I lost our first child, that’s why I took average Joe and care free. I worry way to much. Money can’t buy you happiness. My wife and kids make me happy.

I grew up kinda poor, we never went without food on the table and power but we didn’t have a lot. I thought my friends who had A/C and ice makers were rich. We had neither. Looking back, we weren’t poor, we were just as blessed as anyone else, we had each other.

My kids have more than they deserve, I do too but my wife and I bust our butts to have it. It’s just stuff and we can’t take it with us.

I didn’t choose poor and healthy because my dad grew up poor. His parents were killed in a car wreck when he was 12, he and his sister lived with our cousins growing up. His sister married money, my dad worked his tail off and barely got by. My dad has a bad back and has had multiple back operations and can barely walk now. He saves everything, he says it comes from growing up poor. He doesn’t complain though, he’s average Joe and carefree.

I’ve always wanted to be like my dad. I was him at one point, an alcoholic. December 8th will be 9 years sober for me. When my wife got pregnant with our son, I quit drinking. I told her if he grows up to be an alcoholic he wasn’t learning it from his dad like I did. My son wants to be like me. I tell him don’t be like me, be better than me.

If you never had indoor plumbing it is no big deal

Growing up with no indoor plumbing or electric even now I feel they are luxurious

 

G’morning fellas, lets all enjoy what we have and who we have to enjoy it with. Weather seems to be good again and I’ll be lending a helping hand to a Friend doing some gutter clean outs and adding some type of leaf guards.
Laying in bed wondering if my back is sore from bucking yesterday... I feel ok but that first get up and go may get me ;-)

It’s my spoiled kids Christmas present. It reflects on what @six5crèéd says, I overextend my efforts and what skills have to make sure I can provide my family with the most we can comfortably have! And it makes me happy to be able to do this. So far every board and screw has been put up with my own 2 hands.
