Panic Post-Calgary ECGS Bearing Puller

Hey all,

My buddy and I were running the ecgs bushing swap this morning. It’s been a grind and we mangled the pulling tool after getting mine free.

Is there anyone in Calgary that has a tool we can borrow/buy?

If you can't find an ECGS specific tool, a blind hole puller will work. Before I did mine I read about using them here in one of the big ECGS threads. While not in Canada, I borrowed one from Autozone for free and it worked fine. It isn't as slick as the ECGS thing, and I recommend removing the bumpstop before you use it to give yourself more room, but it works.

Really appreciate the reply, ended up jury rigging the existing tool and got’r done. Quick tack weld with a smaller nut, and smaller stud.

 

Had the same thing happen to my tool in January... They really need to use better steel to make that too IMHO. I was lucky though, it was almost all the way out when it blew, so I was able to just wiggle it out from that point

 

That puller is pretty slick

 

I have to say I'm disappointed. Mine was well and flush on the inside wall of the bearing. Not sure what I could have done to avoid bending the puller (and backing plate) aside from taking a tiger torch to the diff. For the dollar amount, especially on the Canadian peso, it's one hell of a one-time use purchase.

 

if you mangled the tool you are doing something wrong, my guess not centered in the bushing and is slightly catching the edge of the bore

Based on the video's I've seen I would tend to agree with you. When my bearing came out it was depressed on the area where the puller contacted the inside edge. Is it possible that it wasn't completely center lined, I mean yea of course.

That picture is a bit misleading, now that I'm looking back on it. I took that after my buddy was going at his for half an hour. He cross-threaded the ever loving shite out of the threads. Hence all the other dings n dents on it from slipping through his bearing.

 

I do have a blind bearing puller, but you don't need one for this- there is room to get a small jaw behind it, but make sure you grab the bearing. I missed it on my first try.

 

where did you get the busj=hing and puller in calgary

 

Hey Burs, welcome aboard. I ordered the ECGS bushing+tools direct from ECGS. That said I know a few shops in town carry the bushing. One of the parts managers at Heninger told me he carried them. I am sure that KRave and Gear Shop also carry them. Not too sure about the tools though.

As mentioned above, an inside bearing puller would do the trick if you aren't in the mood to wait for the ECGS pull tool.

I’m in no panic for either... the little whine is on,y at slow speed but will change out when it warms up I will check with the local shops and I know they sell them out in Abbotsford. Try to keep it local. Maybe borrow the tool from you when I get at it if you still have it. Thx again.

I hear you. I decided to do mine when I swapped CV's, because why not. I'm happy to give you the one I have, but it is a bit mangled at this point. I'd hate for you to get your axle out and have it not work for you. My buddy really beat the shit out of it when he tried to do his, hence the tacked on nut and bend to the puller. Either way, let me know if you want er!
