New Option for Front Diff Drain Plug

I finally got my old front diff drain plug out and replaced it with this new plug from Kaon, an Aussie outfit that sells direct and also on eBay. Quality looks to be top notch. Nice big 24mm head. Very strong magnet. Made from Hardened and Tempered tool steel. Came with the copper washer.


I took a chance because it said it fit Hilux,Prado,and FJ Cruiser, and the pics looked just like our front diff. Wasn't sure if it would fit a US spec Tacoma, but can now confirm it does fit.

Does it retain the magnet though?

 

It has the magnet, looked to be crimped in there pretty well. They claim it is an "extra strong rare earth magnet" on their website.

 

Don't use a breaker bar to install it.

Haha I know... I stopped at 45 ft lbs just to be safe. I bought the truck used and the plug that was in there had been ripped a new one. Chisel and judicious heat finally did the trick.

 

Also remember that those are probably torque specs for dry, clean threads. If there is diff fluid in the threads (which there inevitably will be), the plug torque should be reduced accordingly.

 

There is a thread with a ton of info already about how the Lexus drain plug can replace this plug...

 

Yes I have read several threads on here about the front diff plug, and was going to get the Lexus plug at first (cheaper), but then found this one that's hardened and also matches the 24mm hex on the other drains. Thought I'd give it a try and see. So far so good, but I'll update if I have any problems with it.

Resurrecting an old thread to ask what feels like a dumb question... Does this plug fit the fill plug too?

Might just replace them both to head off any future stripped hex plugs.

 

Yeah, for about $13. Now that's a hard choice.

 

Yeah, gonna go that route having looked at the price of the Kaon part. Yikes.
