So folks just to share my most recent adventure.... I am the new owner of a 2017 TRD Off Road which has presented the delightful 55 MPH off throttle whine from rear end. After doing the dance twice with Toyota serviceI demanded the service mgr ride with me and he miraculously heard the sound.

They changed the rear leaf spring damper. Fail

They opened a case with Toyota US and were auth to change rear gear set. FAIL Toyota said this is normal sound from the rear end. They said it was (no kidding) the sound of "healthy gears meshing and the result of proper machining process). Guess that means that every other truck and car I have ever ridden in was built poorly following their logic . I think they should have at least kissed me first.

So new ring and pinion didn't change it and damper didn't change it.

Has anyone found an actual fix? I read a few comments on pinion bearing. Would that have been changed when the popped in the new dif? Did that stop it for anyone? How about rear wheel bearings? Driveshaft carrier bearing?

I really would like to keep the rig, I've got plans for it. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Does anyone know if a rear end gear set from a gen 2 work in a gen 3?
    Thanks!

No magic fix unfortunately. Lots of posts about different gears, rear end replacement or using non OEM differential lubricants/additives having little effect on minimizing the noise. The rubber sound insulator cab bushing documented within a TSB helps marginally.

Sad to hear. You too own 2 ton dog whistle. Keep reporting the issue with Toyota when it goes in for service for documentation purposes. Maybe one day . . . .

I spoke directly to "east coast gear" and the replacement gear unit they sell that's already properly set up and ready to install, won't guarantee a "fix" for the infamous whine. They even have a disclaimer posted to the website.

After getting the runaround from the dealer and not wanting to deal with it anymore, I installed Grabber X3s and the noise miraculously went away.

    Loud tires > whining diff.

If it were my problem, I'd find a mechanic who uses an NVH app or similar, and find out what's what.

Heads up, but this issue is a carryover from the second gen. There's even a TSB for it from way back when.

There is a TSB 0013-18 for 18+ (I think) that replaces the rear subframe mounts with upgraded units. For me, it reduced the noise about 75%, which is acceptable for me. It's a truck after all.. You might give that a try and see where it gets you. The fix is all about isolating the cab.

I don’t trust my dealer so I bought the parts and did the TSB myself.
Look at your rear cab mounts and make sure they look like this now. If the TSB was performed these will be there. This fixed my issue.

I had the same whining noise in my 2019 around 9,000 miles. Did the same dance you did with them not hearing it until they went with me. They replaced the rear end and it seemed to go away until about 1,000 miles later. They are aware of it again but can not get authorization from Toyota for another rear end until their regional rep can come hear it. Was told they are not allowed to travel due to covid so it’s a waiting game. I’m in Wyoming and the rep has to come up from Denver.

Out of curiosity, you had the classic 50-60 mph howl prior to the install? Loud enough to drown out the radio even at 30+ volume? And the cab mounts fixed it?

How difficult/time consuming was that work? My 2019 is supposed to have the updated mounts from factory but it certainly does not. I would gladly do the work myself if I was reasonably sure it would fix the issue.

I got a similar runaround when I took my 19 Short Bed in for this. I test drove a 2020 SB after they told me the whine was normal. The 2020 had it but not nearly as pronounced as mine. I also took a short ride in my buddy's 19 Long Bed which didn't have a whine at all.

They changed the gears after I took a ride with one of the techs. The whine was definitely still there with the new gears, but much quieter and in a narrower range on the speedo (similar to the 2020 I drove). Now I've got Duratracs on and can't hear it at all.

Anyone on here have a truck that has the whine and now has higher miles? Curious if it will get worse over time, and I should make a point of getting the dealer to try and fix it again before my warranty is up at 100k.

I have a 2019 4x4 ORDC with the whine. The TSB parts are not on the truck from the factory like Toyota says. I even brought pictures of what its supposed to look like and showed my service mechanic what parts are actually there, but because the TSB doesn’t cover beyond a 2018 he said theres
How hard are those to install? I have a 2019 TRD 4x4 ORDC with the whine pretty bad. Dealer has replaced diff once, no change; installed noico on back wall, no change; tried every kind lube, no change; dealership is now telling me it’s normal and won’t install the TSB parts because 2019+ come with the parts which I personally showed them that it doesn’t. Also, when I bring it up to them now, they refuse to give me the time if day unless I pay a ridiculous fee of $275!

It takes about 2 minutes to install. Literally unscrew the nut, put the part on and tighten it back.

Yes. It took about 2 minutes and significantly quietened the noise down.

Would you happen to have the part number handy? Also, did you do both back cab mounts or just the driver side?

I found the part numbers so all good there. Just so Im clear, you only installed the bell looking damper frame part? I think the other washer part is the same as whats already there.

That is correct. The other part is the same. Not sure why they replace it in the TSB.
