I’ve never done this. Just check the voltage before flashing is above 12 and you’ll be fine

Yes, the update from 04B80 to 04B81 is the one that I am asking about, and that is the perfect answer to that question - Thank You !

I have the same one as you and use 12V supply mode. Works great every time.

These Taco's update fairly quickly, I'll give it that, but just flashed the girl's Camry yesterday and it was flashed in two parts, basically twice as long as it takes ours. Not worth the risk in my opinion. I'll flash tunes all day long without external power for my truck, but when it comes to updating the ECU, what's a few extra steps for added assurance?

I don’t have power when flashing TSBs in a parking lot lol

also if you flash an early 16 truck, it’s a 2 part flash. Takes like 10 minutes.

I always check the voltage in the precheck. If it’s too low, I’d go get another battery. Odds are it’s on its way out anyway..

You can also jumper cable to a running vehicle, common for the European car crowd. Some can pull down 70A during a flash as it cycles high load components.

Did this a few weeks ago flashing in a parking lot. The truck was at 11.5v. We just hooked up some jumper cables to the other running truck and everything was fine.

Bottom line, do whatever you are comfortable with. If battery voltage is over 12v it's not going to drop significantly during a flash. Just turn off everything you can (lights, radio, HVAC fan, etc).

Is the latest (2021) ECU the best version of any 3rd gen to date? If so, could one simply change a late model to it?

It would be, but you can't update to it. ECU IDs have to match. When they drop a TSB for 04B05, you'll be as close as you can get.

Thanks Tony, what’s the likelihood they’ll be a 04B05? probably no ETA in sight....

Are stock tunes octane learning? That seems like code and not tables/maps.

Yes. The Stock and 2.0 tunes are OL.

The code and access that he had inside the ECU before 2.0 was very different.
