Ruger American predator in 450 bushmaster is a pretty cheap option. I’ve got the predator in .308 and 300blk and love them.

That round could hit the house behind the house I accidentally hit in the first place.. making a straight wall cartridge more deadly than a bottle neck one. Lol

I was looking at that earlier. I love the look of it. I have a ruger American in 243 and love that one. Maybe some day.

Don’t overlook the 350 legend, it’s a straight wall cartridge. I have an ar-15 pistol chambered in that, although I haven’t shot it yet, I hear it’s a great deer cartridge.

Bree, I would highly recommend going to a pro shop as well. They will get her measued from proper draw length and such. She'll be up and running (or shooting) in no time. Perhaps you could get her an archery or bowhnting book as well and put a brief note on the inside cover about the rest of the "surprise"? I did that with my dad when I got him started on flyfishing. Was defintitely cool watching him flip it open and start reading.

Also, you have an online pro-shop right here!

    Keep us posted!

Oh, and a book I highly recommend is "Crimson Arrows" by Eyad Yehyawi.

Not to derail the archery thread, my son and I (son mostly) built an AR10 in .308 with PSA components topped off with a Primary Arms 4x14 scope. Accuracy has been outstanding with factory ammo. This is a 3 shot 100 yard group with 150gr Fiocchi FMJ. Measures a touch over .600".

Back at it again. They moved in around 4:30-4:45 last night so fingers crossed. Had probably 30 swans fly low right overhead which was neat
I fully agree depending on the public. If I am hunting where I just pull off the side of the road I will find another area if someone is parked somewhere. It stinks sometimes but they beat you there and that is what I would want someone to do for me.

If there is one specific parking lot for an area I won’t turn around when there is a reasonable amount of cars depending on the size of the area.

I’m surprised I haven’t seen anyone else hunting with the holiday but I have walked in early and gotten back late the last few times out. Saw a truck glassing but couldn’t tell if they were hunting or not yesterday morning.

I just started to leave a note saying to text me if you want to make sure we don’t set up on top of each other on my dash as well.

It really annoys me when people don’t obey the rules of public land. Yes it is easier to leave a stand in there and most areas allow it so it may not seem harmful to do but those are the rules that everyone has to follow and in a lot of areas I think that rule makes a difference in the deer.

I struggled yesterday hunting. Wind was different than the 15-20mph wind out of the NW it was two nights ago when I saw a big 8 point a smaller buck and a doe and fawns. I think I should have just found a different area to sit but I was too excited about the buck I saw.

Yesterday morning it was cold and frosty with thick fog coming in off the river for probably an hour from 7:15-8:15. Still to start off the day then switched to very light wind out of the south. I got up after not seeing anything around 9:30 to brush in the area where I was sitting to prep for the evening and when I was standing moving around a deer blew at me from the southeast and I saw 2 run off. I figure it was the doe and her fawns I saw the previous night.

Went back in in the afternoon anticipating a wind blowing out of the southwest but I got a one out of the southeast. Sat on the ground again but I think the wind just wasn’t right.

I really can’t figure out where the deer I saw were bedded at. Some of them fed briefly in a little dried up swamp/field area I was over. They came from the west but they were moving south when I first saw them so I figure they were northwest somewhere. They were probably traveling between food or another bedding area southeast of where I was which is where the deer came from in the morning.

In the thick CRP it is so hard to pinpoint some bedding areas because they can just lay down in the middle of a field of 8’ tall junk and disappear. I was walking through it yesterday and stumbled on a bed and it shows how easy it would be for a deer to vanish in an area almost impossible for me to move in it is so thick.

Got a west wind that switches to northwest tonight so I’ll going to head to the same area and probably set up in a tree if I can find one that I have decent shooting opportunities and I’m not too out in the open. I’d like to get 100 yards west of where I last was in a tree so I am closer to where I think they cross a levee.

edit: and the gut pile I saw two nights ago was still there untouched yesterday morning and night so maybe there arnt many predators around??? I have no idea how it would last that long. Maybe becuase I am in and out of there. Heard some coyotes howling last night close by

Only problem is that size. Michigan’s rifle line requires a straight wall cartridge between 1.3 and 1.6 inches long, and must be 35 caliber or larger. So they made the 350 legend to pass that requirement. Sweet shooting though. Any idea on the cost?

    My shitty luck....
Got out of the truck today, opened hunting bag....no wallet. What's in this wallet? Only my Illinois hunting license, habitat stamp, archery permits and gun tags. $700 worth of paper basically. No idea where it is. Fell out of my jacket I guess. Anyhow, just called a game warden (he was fantastically polite and understanding), he said I can get them all reprinted for a small fee. I was borderline full freak-out mode. I love December and January hunting!

Hoprfully they reprint without any problems.

That asshole! If his stand is still there in January it's going home with me. (Due to the fact that he's littering on Federal land of course)
