I’m going to try to get out there one more time. I’ve been 10-12 times since 2004. I have family in Sun City. It’s crazy that I’m still getting walnut for $1 a board foot. Two different mills are selling it for that. Everyone else is charging $4-6.

I ordered a Metabo router and other some woodworking tools from the Black Friday sales, and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a set of router bits.

I see some sets on HD and Lowe's website. However, they're a ton of bits for cheap, so I question their quality/longevity. On the flipside, there is a 6 bit set on Rocker for $150 which scares the pocketbook.

General advice is to not go for sets, and buy quality bits for only what you need and add to it. However, if you haven't routed before you may not know what you need. However, I started out with Harbor Freight of all places and they worked well to start me out. Your call if you trust cheapest Chinese materials spinning at 8k.

Whiteside, MLCS are good review and value. I have a ton of Stone Mountain from Peachtree Woodworking and am very happy. The Rockler brand hasn't let me down for anything I've tried.

First bits or set should include a flush trim (one bearing top or bottom or both), roundover with bearing, straight bit that can plunge. After that you can add as you please.

    Thanks for the advice.

I've never used a router before, so I don't know exactly what I'll need. The first projects that I want to do once I finish getting setup are some picture frames and a couple book/media cases. Maybe try my hand at a desk and nightstands after that.

Given those projects, the round over, dado/rabbet, and profile/flush trim that you suggested make the most sense.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
This is the approach I take as well. I've been gifted a few sets here and there and I generally only use a couple out of the set; mostly 1/8" round over or a ogee bit. The most common bit I use. is a rebate bit from MLCS. Also, the Bosch brand you can get at the blue store are good. And the Freud brand you can get at the orange store in a pinch.
    Agreed.

I recommend carbide spirals in both up and down cut as well as a compression cutter, and a flush trim. Those are probably my most used bits along with an 1/8" round over.
