My vote is battery as well, the times I've had alternator issues the car has usually started ok but then stuff starts to go weird while driving. Limp mode, dash gauges going dead, dying at a stop etc.

My battery randomly died one day a little more than two years old. The clamp on resistance battery tester showed it still as good though. It ended up having a dead cell, new battery problem solved.

Well said and I'm proud to know ya. LOL. I came over here from Yellowbullet. com "where the weak are killed and eaten" LMAO. Same story, different subject matter (drag racing) 12 years later, here I am. I'm a tire and battery guy because of poorly unchosen career decisions, ASE A4, P2, C1 and I have trouble recommending shit to guys like "Wilbur" or "Uncle Paul"...Ahahahhahahahahha.
    Thank you Sir.

Lots of differing opinions here, but believe it or not, not very many that are wrong.

If you were a friend asking for advice I would tell you that the only way to know for sure is to use the right tool, and test it correctly.

If you don't own the tool, you need to borrow it or buy it, and you can use Google/youtube to learn to test it correctly if you don't trust the person who was loaning the tool.

One other note....have you tested for a parasitic draw?

OMG, not that! LOL. True story.
Automotive Electrical shop directly in front of, and surrounded on three sides by....wait for it.....BASS PRO MAIN STORE in Springfield, MO. Had a great business, rebuild alternators, starters, and diag'd parasitic draws at $85 hour labor. (dealership is $125 in that area). Shop is out of business now. No one wanted to take over the business, or learn the trade. They survived Bass Pro, and died of lazy kids? LOL

OP, pick up one of these so you don't go crazy next time; it'll allow you to check your entire charging system.

You could get a digital one for about the same price as well.

You have to think about it like this.
    It’s a 2017
    It has 80k miles
Think of how many times that battery had to turn that engine over.
    Replace the battery

We had an engine shop in town that suffered the same fate, no younger kids wanted to learn the business and the owner passed away. Shame, they were the only ones around here that still hot tanked.

That is exactly what my old once retired self is doing these days, sitting at a bench rebuilding starters & alternators. Owner didn't want any young kids with their face buried in their phone all day. And since I'm posting, Bill, what size tires can I fit on stock suspension?

OP, FYI a weak battery kills the solenoid in your starter, think of stick welding, if the plunger does not slam hard & fast into the contacts they get arced. Just in case you find a starting issue later down the road after replacing the battery.

That's very cool. Brushes and other internal parts hard to find? I know looking for bendix was hard for some of my customers.
I'm not Bill, but you may be surprised but I would not recommend anything except what the truck came with. It adds no height really and width is a manly thing right? lol. Here's my example.

Very nice ride. We have basically 2 suppliers, can get most all parts, except for the farmer with the Russian made tractor looking for a new armature. No my question to bill was me just being facetious, cause he seems to get so upset with folks not at his level of knowledge.

So I had the battery replaced and still my trucks dash lights come on very slow when I turn the lights on and also my head unit is laggy as well.

This seems to be more than a battery at this point unless the new battery needs to get power to it for awhile.

Any other ideas as to what could be causing this?

Just wondering.... Did you maintain the water level of the battery over the last 3 years..?

Some don't know that these batteries like H2O every spring...... Mine has needed a little each spring during my spring cleanup of cables, etc.

Sound like another electrical issue with the dash..... I had the issue of the push button "trips" zeroing out on their own.

There's a TSB for that somewhere. They replaced the dash guage cluster.

(RESOLVED, T-SB-0148-16) Uninitiated trip meters reset | Page 2 | Tacoma World

    John

    I'll look for it.
