3rd Gen HID vs LED vs Halogen H11 projector headlights

Groundbreaking, not exactly. Their XB fogs were the first aftermarket SAE LED fog to gain notable traction in the Tacoma realm, but output performance was pretty low. While the original XB headlights were outperformed by Toyota’s OEM LED headlights, not all vehicles have quality high performing OEM LED headlights available. The F150 comes to mind. Both the halogen and OEM LEDs are given the worst possible IIHS rating of poor. Since the OEM halogens use H13/9008, there are minimal bulb upgrades available to improve performance, the best commonly available being Philips Xtreme +100. They will help, but it will be an enhancement not the huge difference needed. H13/9008 is a bulb type most common in American makes and not something the big 3 bulb brands seem interested in producing their extreme performance bulbs for. In this case, the Morimotos XB headlights could be a great option and bring something revolutionary to the table. In the Tacoma realm, we are spoiled with some great factory light options, with the bar set far higher for the aftermarket to compete against.

Edit: I will add though their new replacement LEDs do appear groundbreaking. I look forward to trying them out.

 

They would be $2400+ locally. Toyota Canada is a rip-off.

Where are you all finding the GE Xenon +120s or the GE/Tungsram +130s? I can't seem to locate a retailer who has the proper size.

The headlights are oem made by valeo, most likely the projector is also made by valeo. And the car is only a year old, so the headlights are in perfect conditions. Before that i had a car with oem headlights and h1 projector and I noticed the same thing, expensive halogen bulbs are better and some models worth the money but the difference is not that big as on reflector headlights.

 

Keep in mind the precision differences are relative to the assembly. That is, if you have a very large assembly like a huge reflector the small change in the precision filament is much less than if you have a very small assembly like a compact projector bowl.

 

Have you had a chance to review the new Phillips 4800k hid bulb that both xd and trs are offering with the xd h11 35w kits?

 

Now that XD, TRS and Headlight Revolution are all the same company through the buy outs.

But no, nor do I plan on it. There is no such thing as a legitimate H11 HID bulb. These are all China hacked products to run an illegitimate halogen based HID bulb in an assembly specifically designed for a halogen bulb. The result will be illegal levels of blinding glare through the halogen uplight allowance, being the projector is specifically calibrated for a halogen. To properly run HID, you need an HID projector.

 

I must have misunderstood your review of the hid in post 1 seemed like you were a fan of the 4300k Phillips setup offered by xd. In the images it appears to have less uplight than the ge +130 in the comparison?

 

The rebased Philips HID bulbs offered by XD in the past were far higher performing than their claimed house brand copies of the HID bulbs.

If you look at the XD vs GE +130 photo in the original thread, you'll see that the HID bulbs have more uplight and that is for the low performance house brand HID, not the higher output Philips option. In short, HIDs are not recommended unless you have a proper HID projector, in which case there are proper HID performance bulbs that are absolutely light years ahead of what these aftermarket companies offer.

 

This probably qualifies as a dumb question... but do any 3rg gen projector headlight housings fit 2nd gens? I am guessing not?

 

No. And performance wise the 2nd Gen headlights are far higher performing, so you wouldn't really want to use a 3rd Gen headlight anyway.

 

Interesting... my 2009 just has old school reflectors not projectors. They are OK... just OK.

 

A lot can be had with a simple bulb upgrade if you are running stock bulbs (assuming your assemblies are in good condition). Below you can see the output comparisons between the Gens.

^^ Ouch! Could you (is it fair to) add OEM LED as a bar on 3rd gen since it's technically an OEM housing Granted it's not fair to compare bulb swap with $1600 housing upgrade cost-wise.

ETA: Still, nothing compares to 2nd gen headlights, pretty intense to see how significant the delta actually is.

Also, for this side by side comparison it might be even more stark to see both graphs with the same absolute scale of 2500 max?

 

I don't see that Osram offers the Hyper and All Season you list above in my 2nd gen reflector headlight size which is: H4 9003?? Their NiteBreaker Laser seems to be the brightest offering:
