In my minimal research I just did i noticed portable workstations that gave the best features but were on the 3k price range :(

I was hoping to spend more like 600 lol

Do you have any idea on a laptop model that's easy to upgrade? I might go the route of getting a used barebones one from ebay and then buy the components to upgrade it.. im sure that's cheaper in the long run

A lot of laptops these days are awful to upgrade, but some of them can be, pretty much have to google each one and see what it takes to add ram or swap a hard drive. Thinkpads are pretty well known to be repairable and upgradable, I was just looking at the Thinkpad P52 on ebay -

If it weren't for the solidworks, this would be easier, but solidworks is supposedly picky. Does the school have workstations available for CAD usage, or are they expecting everyone to pony up for a portable workstation?

This one might be a candidate as well - the P50. Its older, but it still hits your minimum requirements.

Yes the school has a computer lab that's fully functional for all CAD softwares it's more so for me to be able to do school projects at home so im not stuck completely at their mercy as well as after I graduate and need it for work.. I don't want work to buy a laptop for me (although I'm sure they would if I begged hard enough) because I want the freedom to still have the hardware should I leave for bigger and better things.. or if I start building stuff for my own projects like I really wanna do

You can vote for more than one person, there are 12 calendar pages that need winners after all

But a vote for me is a vote for the future

Ah ok. Only other thought then is to consider the possibility of getting the company to build you a work desktop down the road. It'll be much more performance per dollar than a laptop.

That's a great point.. I might just go with that P50 and get them to build a desktop after I graduate

It's interesting this is the first TW calendar year that isn't going to be mostly SAS'ed Tacomas in the calendar lol. I think I only saw one submitted.

The first few years I was on here (2016-2018) literally the majority of winners of the 1st gen calendar photos were SAS'ed 1st gens

I can't help you out too much, unfortunately. I've had some beastly Lenovo desktop replacement and HP ultrabooks for work in the past. Last few years I have just had a MBP for work
