Hi Myles. My understanding and experience with AWD is that the center diff (instead of transfer case) can let all the power spin only one wheel, meaning it’s mechanically possible, as opposed to a true 4wd t-case which has to spin both front and rear in order to turn at all. As in, a 4wd without lockers can spin a right front and left rear at the same time. If you get traction on one or the other you will move forward. An AWD car (without an “active” center diff to compensate), can spin just one wheel and be stuck, which is mechanically impossible with real 4x4.

On Subaru's they have symmetrical AWD so power is always sent to all wheels.. Most AWD drive systems work like this now but Subaru and Audi does it best..

4WD is great and all your wheels get power but traction control will send power to where it feels it is needed. Sometimes this is the wheel that is slipping, that is why traction control is a pain when you are in the snow.. When one wheel is slipping it will send your power to that... But all wheels do get power in the snow with 4WD just some are favored...

A locker allows you to lock your axle together making one solid shaft, ensuring that both the left and right tires on that axle spin at the same rate.. This allows you to use slip and find grip no matter what side it is on. This is why on a 3rd gen when you engage the locker it is truly the only way to disable all the sensors. Not just most but all.

When you are turning in 2WD the computers allow for one wheel to spin at a slightly different rate than the others. Not very noticeable on the highway or road but in parking lots very noticeable. 4WD still allows for variation but not as much so your turning radius is limited and skipping becomes a problem. A diff will kill your turning radius because your axle is locked together. The nice thing about open axles is it improves your tire life and turning radius.. That is the reasons we have them..

Here is my 0.02 cents not promising it is all correct but this is my very basic explanation...

This whole thread hurts my head. I wanted to jump in and help out but it's just too much misinformation for me to deal with right now.

2nd gen wasn’t really my fault the battery is near the transmission fluid line. Off roaded really hard 2 weeks later corner of battery cut through the line. Toyota fixed for free.

on my 3rd gen it’s been weird since the start. But my gears are starting to Pit and synchros are off. Again Toyota said they would fix it for free. Bringing it in next week.

Not often but when I do I definitely push its limits. On the 2nd gen I really mobbed it hard a couple times. Never jumped either but just going fast through ponds and high speeds on fire trails. I also think learning to 4wd on 35s with a manual with a Camry engine powered truck didn’t help. 2nd gen was auto 3rd gen is a manual.

I used to break things... until I figured out it was me and not the truck/bike/motorcycle/tractor/relationships.
I toned it down and *poof* a miracle occurred and things didn't break anymore.
