Power Slides bad?

Hey Guys,
I was talking to my roommate and he said not to slide with 4 wheel drive activated. If you have traction control off, I don't think this harms your truck at all... what do you guys think or know?

 

If it's slippery enough for the tires to keep spinning I don't see the harm in it. It's fun as hell also! On a closed circuit of course...

 

If you stay in the snow, you should be fine. However, it's not the snow that is so bad, it's finding a dry spot while sliding, all that momentum and hitting dry pavement through snow can be bad. I'm not going to be a grandpa and tell you to not even think about doing it, just be careful and know your surroundings. I plan on doing some donuts as soon as we get some better snow

 

I did it in the rain the other day with cars around and it was fun not the best place to do it but it happened on accident

 

It isn't GOOD for the truck... as long as it is very slippery out, it shouldn't be particularly BAD either. If you are sliding around in 4wd and one of your front wheels gains solid traction, you could do some damage to the front end though.

What about doing that in mud?

 

Pretty much same as what I said above but I would believe mud would be a little harder on it than snow/ice because mud adds more resistance. I have done so many donuts in the 4 Jeeps I have owned off road and I can't say it ever did any damage...other than things I have slid into Go ahead, but again, be careful. Have fun!

 

yeah man, mud , snow ice, penty of slip and your tires wont grip on slick roads, or slick offroads....you'll be fine...worst case sceneario, its warrantied..

 

sure its fun and all but all it takes is a slight miscalculation or the correct cicumstances and you could end up like this:

i rolled my 07 almost the same way but i was on the street, lost traction and fishtailed into grass which was just enough inertia to cause it to roll......

be careful and have fun...just remember what the circumstances may be.

 

Thats why i practiced with my parents cars years ago before using mine!

 

I did pretty much the same thing, except that I was hauling ass down a dirt road, that was just wide enough for two cars, went around a corner that didn't look very sharp, but in mid corner it turned 90 degrees and fish taled and slamed into an inbankment head on and it flip on to the driver's side. It sucked ass but at least i have full coverage insurance.

 

Despite the safety concerns, from a mechanical standpoint, I wouldn't do it in 4WD. Assuming you're in 2WD, as long as your tires can slip you SHOULD be OK. When the tires gain traction is when you're going to run into some issues unless the rear diff is built for it.
