I could have jacked it up far enough to achieve that but opted not to cause it still weighs a ton more than a taco case, its chock full of gears. As it was I was happy to have a buddy present and a trans jack. It really didn't feel like coming off the trans haha.

Could be better to be honest. I was just starting to get somewhere with the taco when I had to set it all aside to fix this case haha. Once the cruiser is back to daily status I can pull the taco down and get it sorted, I have all the stuff for that now so that's nice. So really the only thing standing in my way is the cruiser and my willingness to subject myself to working on it. It's a lot tougher to work on than the tacoma, it's Toyota but, it's very different architecture. Things that seem small are just on a much larger scale and involved because they're over built. Like just changing this seal is gonna have me disassemble the extension housings and pressing out the shafts, just to change a shaft seal :/

On the plus side, I got to work today and my boss was appreciative of my knowledge and effort. He's recommending me for a higher position that should open really soon and thinks I have a good chance (he would like me to) at taking his position when he retires, which sounds like it is in a couple years.

    How's your stuff progressing?

Is it just old school and therefore heavy, or does it feel like newer designs that are just extra beefy because lc?

I feel ya, I struggle with getting started on those same kinds of projects. I know you are totally capable of kicking that project's ass but you must be feeling the stress of the anticipated effort involved

.sounds like a pretty productive place to work and it's cool that you have opportunities there! Do you think you want to stay long term?

It still feels modern, it's largely aluminum construction and nothing is built like a brick shit house just because it is easier to design. They definitely selectively overbuild the running gear though. Take for example the job I'm currently doing, it's been 215k without a drop leaking from this case, a multimode AWD case no less. The extension housings each have three support bearings and all dust shields are double sided to avoid as much foreign shit intrusion as possible. I think the LC just knows its the top dog of expedition vehicles, this is the same running gear (79 series, 80 series, 105 series all used this same drivetrain setup) they design to carry people though some of the most desolate and harsh places. African Savannas, Middle Eastern Deserts, Eastern European cold and muck... its designed to take all that kind of stuff like a taco takes weekend warrior and highway duty, with longevity. So the drivetrain is overbuilt but it isn't unnecessarily heavy, nothing is old fashioned cast iron besides third members and engine block. This case in particular is heavy because it is gear driven, much of the weight is the center differential and locker setup as well as the underdrive assembly and viscous unit. The trans is huge, originally designed for Mitsubishi Fusos and Hino Busses, and comes with a straight cut first gear.... in an auto haha. But that's there as a stump pulling low gear that you can abuse as much as you want in low range and crawling situations. The engine is a I6 with 7 main bearings where the entire upper oil pan makes a huge bearing girdle, the bottom end is forged even. Toyota even sells three full kits to rebuild it every 300k (though its unlikely you'd need to touch it before 600k) and the manual says with proper care there is no reason it shouldn't last over 1 million miles.

So to answer the question is it overbuilt, absolutely for most use. But it is wasteful and thoughtless in design, I'd argue no.

My shits going alright. Trying to juggle home repairs and improvements, the Tacoma build, and work.

Just finished cleaning up the ramps and doing some finish welding and grinding. Probably won't be able to paint them for at least a week due to weather which makes me cranky because they're gonna get dumped in the snow this weekend when I go wheeling.

My product at work is supposed to release in Feb but my team lead is about to go on paternity leave and I'm next in line and our team is down a person. He told me to push back on working extra hours (we don't get OT) even if it means pushing the launch back but I'm not sure how well I can do that.

I wanted to order a bunch of taco SAS parts on black Friday but decided I should get the axles from my buddy and go through them and start cutting the Tacoma up before I commit to certain coilovers, steering, etc
