I recently went to look at a 2016 Tacoma manual transmission with no badges on it. The dealership says it is an SR5 however it has a locking rear differential. Does the 2016 SR5 come with a locking rear differential or is this a TRD off-road with the badges removed? The truck is also originally from Canada so maybe this could have something to do with the trim confusion?

Buy it if the price is right (SR5 but really TRD OR) and some guy hasn't tried to pull stumps with the parking brake on.

Did the guy at the dealership actually look up the serial number?
How do you know for sure that it actually has a locking rear differential?

Enter the VIN in the Toyota owners website and it will tell you how it came from Toyota.

If it has factory installed locking diff, and crawl control (with knob and all) , then it is a de-badged Off Road.
The thing is that my 2017 Off Road comes up as SR5. Don't know why, but it is what it is.

Edit. Somehow I skipped over the fact that it's a mt - so no crawl.
    Thanks @JEFFRPM for catching that,

I don't think crawl control was available with a manual trans?

I looked up the VIN on Toyota's site and it does not specify. It is classified as a TACOMA 4X4 ACCESS CAB V6 6M no mention of SR5 or TRD Off Road.

So the 2016 SR5 was not made in a manual?

    Was not available for SR5.

SR had a 5 speed manual in 2016 and 2017
TRD Sport still has a 6 speed manual
TRD Off-Road still has a 6 speed manual

Apparently TRD isn't a separate trim in some databases. Rather, it's SR5 with TRD Off-Road package. Just confirm it's got the rear locker button on the overhead console.

Now, can you live with the Celsius temp display in the climate control panel? :p

The SR back then only had the 5 speed with the 4 cylinder. V6 were auto only.

What does it have under "PORT OR FACTORY INSTALLED EQUIPMENT"? It should say "OC TRD Off Road Package" if it is an Off-Road.

However, being a Canadian truck, possibly the information isn't as detailed on the Toyota website as USA sold trucks.

EDIT: Just plugged in a random SR5 from a Canadian dealership. Website isn't as great as for USA trucks it seems.
