    Correct.

I openly tell the salesperson after the purchase of my new cars that I’m not going to get extended warranty, GAP coverage blah blah ... didn’t want them to waste time.
Fact you can get all the things they are trying to sell you through ur regular car insurance for much less.

You could also get a Tesla .... with Tesla insurance (in CA for now) which would directly contribute to the unemployment status of all the people at the dealership , and most of the people at the insurance claims offices.

In the Austin TX area, San Marcos and New Braunfels Toyota/Mazda dealers include a "lifetime power train" warranty.

My experience is that it does not move the needle one way or another, but has provided me with leverage at other dealerships.

The reason they pitch it is because it makes them money, so good for them I guess.

I've been fortunate to never have owned a piece of shit, but damn, some folks just have crappy cars that constantly need repairs. Nissan's and Chevy sedans.

So Karen allowed herself to be sold the prime steak with a markup. She had the time to digest it and found out it was choice based on the picture she took of it. She befriended a US Foods sales rep you gave her the low down on what the steak costs the restaurant and that the guy who fired it up was likely drunk on fireball travel bottles. So she marched in there the next day and dropped her Dooney on the finance manager's desk like a bank robber and demanded he fill it. Do we have this right? Is this the summary of events? In the real world this wouldn't even be something worth posting, the only reason it's here is for validation. So let me tell you a story.

I once bought a pair of pants, Levis to be specific and the salesman told me my ass looked phenomenal in them. I went home and researched and found out it cost Levi about $8 to make them. So I returned them.

    Depends on the vehicle.

For example, in the case of Dealer special lifetime power train warranties, I had a finance guy tell me they estimate a cost of less than $100 all together, but obviously that assumes many folks will have no claims. Doubt it's that profitable on shitty brands.

I’ll bet the chick who shit her pants (Levi’s?) in your truck, name was probably Karen.

If so that would definitely explain the fixation.

both my 97 Altima and my 95 Pathfinder only needed wear items replaced throughout their lives. Both of them cleared a quarter million miles.

But I feel like the lone trooper defending Nissan out here... :goingcrazy:

A Good Karen would have done her research first before getting bowled over in the finance manger's office.

With those dealer warranties you have to do every single service at the dealer. I'm not 100% sure if it's the factory recommended service or "their service schedule" but that's always the catch. A dealer near me used to do tires for life, but you had to have an alignment done there yearly and a few other hoops. My friend had it and calculated out that for a set of Duratracs it made sense, but otherwise it doesn't.

The only time I think the extended warranty makes sense is if you're automotively clueless and the finance flim flam sorta works out (like my BIL was offered 3% less than the local CU on his loan if he did the extended warranty on his Corolla and the thought of paying for a broken car threw him for a loop).

That being said, I did do the Lifetime Maxcare on my wife's Jeep Grand Cherokee because FCA. It's a $200 deductible if anything breaks for the life of the car independent of mileage. If the repair is greater than the book value of the car, they give me book value less my deductible. It seems like a no-brainer to me.

I didn’t cause a fuss like some Karen, I went in there and told them I want to cancel it, deflected some BS, signed the paper and done. No speaking to the manager, no threatening to sue, haha. Just talking some shit online on how some salesman tried to pull one on me. So bummed I didn’t hit the mark on what you think I should post. I’ll try to do better next time.

Had something similar on my LJ. not sure if it saved me or not, cuz by the time I got rid of that heap of s*** I was paying more on warranty deductibles that I was the actual car payment.

From what I've read, at least for mine it's per visit, not per item, so if I can stack up 4-5 items I can get them all done at once. That being said, outside of a CEL at like 1,000 miles for a random EGR code and a faint coolant smell that the dealer cannot trace (the level's fine), it's been a tank for the past 45,000 miles. Is it perfect, no, but it's been much less of a headache than I thought it would be.

My problem was each item would break one at a time. And a lot of the visits were mystery items like oh, more death wobble. Let's replace something else and see if that fixes it. Oh. Now your brake booster's out. Kind of need to get that fixed ASAP. what's that? Your fuel sending unit decided to take a holiday? Back to the shop

    Lol

I'm sure that some have strings. The ones I know about require you to provide proof of things like fluid changes etc.

My brother had his 2007 FJ tranny replaced under one of these since Toyota had claimed it did not need it, or needed it every 100k.

That is one case I have first hand experience with.

Hence getting the warranty when you buy FCA! Of course when it starts to nickel and dime you, you bin it.

That’s a good deal. Like my friend, if you work the system right it can work out quite well.

I should have binned it. The problem is with it being an LJ... I might have bit the dust myself. Oof. Instead I took a 9k loss to get into a 2wd utility package SR Taco.... Because fuck FCA lol

Had an old daily driver like that! PCV valve, head gasket, plugs, electrical, and 6 fuel pumps later I got tired of playing that game!

Ford warrantied it all and even they said “We have no idea, but we’ll get rid of it at auction for you”

I get the strong impression that the finance guys get a commission every bit as much as the sales floor, and they both want a bite out of you. I don't have much love for them. At least I can choose what sales associate I'm willing to work with.

The first half of the visit to the finance desk usually involves me folding my arms, glazing my eyes, and politely repeating the phrase "no thank you." I'm only there to review the terms that I agreed to on the sales floor and not a penny more. No to any extra warranty, hell no to free wiper blades or car washes or floor mat sealant.

Some finance guys wound up being surprisingly cool about it, especially if I could mirror their own trick of appearing interested in whatever family photo or golf trophy or knickknack was laying on their desk. Others were visibly annoyed by the time I started signing. Don't care either way. I've seen way too many pull some shady ass games with the terms sheet. If I can keep the skimming off my wallet to a bare minimum then it's a win.
