Undercoating Flaking, Cause for Concern?

    I'm going to look at an out of state '04 tomorrow and have asked the seller to perform the hammer test on the frame. He said that some of the undercoating flaked off when tapping on the frame but from the pics he sent the metal underneath looks okay. The hardware looks unaffected and one side of the frame looks great which leads me to believe it may have been an issue with the application of the coating. The truck spent most of its life in snowless areas with the exception of a couple of years in Alaska. Thoughts?

    mine wasn't too bad under either, until the coating came off by the cat and a couple other spots aint never seen before in 2 decades
    two spot i can pit blame on the rack

    If you end up buying get that undercoating off!

    Moisture gets between the undercoating and the frame and in most climates never dries.

    A good coating of sheep fat seems to work wonders.

    A few OE parts from fancy trucks
    Round end of a ball peen. Stout screwdriver to probe. Camera to attach to your phone that will act as a borescope.

    Pictures are hopeful, personal testing still required.

    As @Wyoming09 says, ditch the 'undercoating' ASAP and go with something like Fluid Film or WoolWax if you live in salt country.

    i have only bot spray cans and they were much cheaper direct sale by the dozen, about $5 less per can

    Looks pretty clean. But it's the inside that counts! Absolutely concur on FF or WW or even just oil/grease, anything to stop the rust.
