That’s definitely something for me to consider, I’m still learning about building with anything other than conventional stick framing so I’ll research it and do a cost analysis. Thanks for the heads up.

This gives me an idea . . .

Seriously though, does anybody else leave time capsules? On my big, for me, remodel projects I'll leave a time capsule behind the sheetrock.

I always sign & date inside the walls somewhere in my house builds , and usually leave some message like "Why are you tearing apart all my hard work !?!?" Haha

Two houses back the owners put a family time capsule and pictures of us working on the building in one of the hollow stair newels before I glued the cap on

So we’re wanting to add an outside receptacle on our covered front porch, but I’ll have to drill through brick and block. I’m guessing I’ll need to drill from the outside in to keep the brick from flaking off, correct? Should I drill through the brick or a mortar joint? I’m guessing through the brick itself. I’ll probably rent a hammer drill and buy a new masonry bit.

I believe you'll want to drill directly into the brick, preferably as close to center as possible.

We used to leave an empty beer can and the newspaper from that day.

PS. For the youngsters, a newspaper was a thing we would read to get the current events before the internet and the Kardashians.

In some instances I feel it's easier to just rehang all new drywall. I came home one year from a fishing trip and my wife had taken the wallpaper off of a bathroom. She also took half the drywall backing with channels and gouges everywhere. It looked like she peeled a potato with the eye removal end. I attempted to re-plaster it but ended up just replacing it. It sounds like a bigger job than it is. I don't think drywall is that expensive either. If you invest in 4-5 blade widths from 3" to 12", the mud and taping really isn't that hard. Yes, a pro can do 2 coats in 2 days with little sanding but you'll get the hang of it. You'll have to put in new baseboards and casings around doors but it will look so good and fresh. I would do it just to learn the skill.

Easy to patch that mortar down the line, can’t say that about the brick. I say that wishing previous owners had done that, some they did and some they didn’t.
