So, I have a TRD 4.0L Tacoma Double Cab - but exactly what "racing" features does it have and what difference is it other than engine size. For instance: I have a TRD but I also see that Toyota offers a TRD exhaust system. Do I have that on my truck? What about the air intake and filter - is it special? To be honest the truck has plenty of power and I am not seriously looking for performance upgrades (yet;) )- would like a throatier sounding muffler though.

I tried searching for this info but couldn't pin point anything down. Any info would be appreciated and sorry for the n00b Q.

TRD=Toyota Racing Development. Not just racing gear, but genuine Toyota performance parts/accessories.
I think the TRDs only have comfort/appearance/suspension differences from SR5 or base trucks. The only performance oriented equipment would be the locking differential on the Offroad or limited slip on the Sport. I could be wrong.....I'm still in a 1st gen truck.

    You're not wrong.

Unless your dealer (or previous owner of the truck) modded the truck, engine/performance wise it'll be exactly the same as any other Tacoma with the 4.0 V6.

    All the normal TW BS
TRD = Toyota Racing Development. Mostly there for the marketing.
Sport package gives different options than base. Most obvious is the LSD and bilstien shocks
Offroad package gives different options than base. Most obvious is the Locking Rear diff. and bilstiens.

You have the TRD exhaust only if you asked for that as an option
The intake and filter isn't special or changed between TRD/non-TRD

    Gah and I'm late!

My TuRD has the locking diff. and horsepower adding decal but I thought
the spring rates (coil&leafs) and shocks were different too?

Bummer - I thought that TRD logo was pretty fugly. Was thinking about taking it off. Any other decals that offer more HP?;) Don't know what sock monkey is. Sorry.

Kind of disappointing that it is more show that performance. I was hoping at least there was an intake or exhaust diameter difference. I opted out of 4WD since I have a 30 min commute every day. I guess the standard breather, headers and exhaust is in order for performance gains. Thanks for the info.

Most "scoops" in the auto and cycle world are non functioning. Outside of aesthetics that is.

BTW, if you want a better sounding muffler, throw a Magnaflow (I did) or a Flowmaster on the stock piping. I have yet to see anyone produce a dyno sheet showing significant gains from a cat back like the TRD on these trucks.

Don't forget your muffler bearings, or 710 cap.

And don't ever leave home without plenty of blinker fluid, heaven forbid your blinkers stop working when they run out of fluid.
