Canoe Mount???

Alright guys, as you can tell I'm fairly new to this website although I'm not new to off roading.. I had a 2002 Zr2 blazer before my taco and sadly I had to retire at 205K miles.. Anyway, I camp quite a bit and I used to mount a canoe on the roof racks of my blazer.. Well now that I bought a brand new 2011 Tacoma sport I don't know my best bet in terms of mounting it... Really the only thing I'll put on the roof is the canoe.. The bed will be loaded to the gills with camping stuff so that's not an option... Any help or ideas/options would be welcome..

thank you I appreciate it... If I'm just doing a canoe though I think my best bet would be the OEM roof rack... I'm ASSuming price isn't too high on those but we'll see.. Thanks again.

 

OEM is just under $300 depending on where you look just to give you a ballpark on the price. Obviously used would be less but they're hard to come by. Ebay is a good place to start looking, there's a seller in MA who was selling a few sets, not sure if he still is. Your other options would be Thule or Yakima roof racks. REI.com has pretty good prices for them.

 

OP.. check out craigslist for a yakima/thule roof rack. I scored one off there that with everything would have cost me close to 800 for only 175. Just buy the right mounts (I like the ones that go in to the door edge.. alot easier to remove). Then get one of the pieces that plug in to the hitch (given that you have one) and extends up to the height of the cab.



just noticed, you could just buy one crossbar and one set of mounts to make it work.

 

Check how high it goes. It may not match up properly with the top.

Throw a tarp over it and camp off the ground...........

 

That is the way to go except for the tarp part. The mosquitos here will feast if all you have is a tarp.

 

Yeah, same here, was just kidding but you could in a pinch. When we went to San Angelo with kayaks/bikes, I just slept in the passenger seat laid back. It was too windy and cold to put up a tent and fuck sleeping on the ground anyway, lol.
