Purchased to keep vs. Purchased to sell

Did you purchase your truck with the intention of keeping it or selling it down the road?

  1. Driving it until the wheels fall off; this thing ain't going nowhere.

  2. These things hold value so well, I always intended to resell eventually!

Still have the 1999 Ford ranger, 187k and still runs like new.
Got the taco for traveling...will it be with me as long as the ranger?? not sure...

Most mass produced vehicles are utilitarian and an expense. It is not an investment as it is not an asset that can generate income or appreciate in value over time. You will never get any more money out of it versus the money you spent on it.

Either I die or my Tacoma dies. That’s the only way I separate from my truck

I mean, you're right, but I think we're using the term "investment" loosely here. If you spend 32k on a taco you can put 75k miles on it and sell it 5 years later for 28k. On most any other truck you'd drop at least 10k in value. So, technically it's not an investment, but it definitely is a tool that has high purchasing power parity in the auto world.

I bought my 2021 SR 4x2 2.7l with the intention of keeping it until I die. That being said, I also bought it because of the strong resale just incase I need to trade it for a 4x4. Where I live and with the things I do, it is perfect as is... I would never even use the 4x4, but I never know what the future will hold. I have always wanted a Toyota pickup since before there even was a Tacoma... man that ages me. But I never was able to justify the purchase, but now I can so I did. :)

And as an investment, all vehicles are a foolish choice because you loose money 99% of the time. That being said, these are the least foolish of the choices out there. I feel that there is much more to the choice to buy a Tacoma, but I am not sure anyone can say that resale value does not play a part in it.

Most cars don't hold their value very well, and I would think the idea of resell value is part of the reason the Tacoma is as popular as it is. My last car was a 2010 Mazda 3 that I bought for 24k in 2010. Traded it in on my Tacoma last year for 3500. I got 110k miles and 10 years out of that car with the only oil changes and tires. It was not an investment, but it was so much fun to drive and I feel I got 10 years of value out of that thing.

If I keep my Tacoma for 10 years, and get 10 to 15k out of it, I would take that in a heartbeat and move on to the "next shiny toy" Who knows, maybe the 2030 Tacoma will have rear disc brakes! One can dream.

This is pretty much the way I feel. Nearly all my personal vehicles over the years have been on the second half of their lives and some down to the last quarter. My current daily driver is a 2006 Honda Element that I bought with 182K on the odometer and a bad engine. I put a used JDM motor, new windshield, four tires and CV joints in it and for a grand total of $1700 all in I have an all wheel drive beater that is dead reliable. My '21 TRD OR AC is my toy and I expect to have it until I die.

I have never been able to understand the mind set that thinks they have to have a new vehicle every 2-3 years.

This pretty much says it for me. I'll be letting go of my '06 TRD OffRoad soon as it's being replaced by a '21 TRD OffRoad. 14 years on CT roads without a major issue (save for a frame replacement in 2015) is great, but given my age it's time to refresh with (hopefully) my last Tacoma. While it's nice that they have a decent resale value, I'm not counting on it to help pay off the new one. In fact, I'll probably hold onto it for a few months.

Edit: I'm a few decades past the 'New every few.' In the long run, it doesn't provide a good return on the investment.

I agree completely, and no thanks necessary at all lol I started talking to some buddies about this topic the other day and got some pretty interesting responses out of them; figured the same could be said for on here.

Yeah, getting ready to cut mine up here in a couple weeks time myself, to install this ARB bumper I finally got my hands on, so.....yeah. This one's not going anywhere. lol

And why not? EVERY one I've owned has treated me well (except for the first Toyota pickup in the '80s that sucked a valve at 37K). Every one since then has been a pleasure to own with minimal cost of maintenance.

It's understood it will be a lose as it will depreciate with use. That being said, a Tacoma will depreciate at a much slower rate compared to many other vehicles. When someone says they buy a Tacoma as an investment, it isn't to make money, it's to use it with the best return.

I am on my 3rd Taco, and when I buy them, I am sure that I am going to keep it for a long time. But it seems every 2 to 3 years I get the bug, and I end up trading it in. Good news is that they hold their value extremely well and I am not rolling negative equity from one vehicle to another. So now I have a 2021 that is fully paid off in the event that I want to trade it in in the next 2 to 3 years.

This time around I am putting a little more money into it so that I have an incentive to hold onto it longer. I mean, I don't have a payment anymore so I can put the money that I was paying into mods.

I bought my 17 Tacoma as a retirement present for me. Told my wife we are going to have to see if I outlast owning the truck or its still around and I am not. I am 61 now. I keep cars long term when I get a good one. Happy so far.

You’ll never come out ahead but with a Tacoma, it doesn’t hurt as bad to jump to a different vehicle. In a way, it’s the closest thing to a vehicle “investment” as they come.

My Tacoma has always been my dream truck since I was in college. Some people want Lambos and Ferraris...I wanted a Taco hah. I bought it with the intention of keeping and passing on to my future generation.

Yup, this is spot on. It’s great knowing you’re really never going to be underwater when owning a Taco. Or most Toyotas for that matter
