What Chainsaw do you run?

I love my 261. Working it for 2 years up here on the mountain and no issues. The old guy that works the Stihl department at ACE recommended it for my needs. He said the electric power company forestry workers love the 261.

 

Love my 261. Amazing power to weight ratio. Just picked it up in January and have taken down several sizeable oaks. Handled it with ease.

Added - I don't cut firewood, so I'm rarely stationary. I'm about 165 soaking wet, so I wanted something light & powerful for ground work.

 

Doesn't the C stand for something? like it self adjusts the fuel mixture for different altitudes etc?

261 “cm” has the “auto tune” technology or whatever stihl calls it

 

I have a new 261 C M, and I really like it a lot -- I saw the reviews on the 500i. Another great saw I am sure. Price -- the 500i seems to be priced about double, (or more) what you could get a 261CM for. Soo that means get TWO 261'CM's s or get the newest sweet running toy on the market!
Remember --when looking there is a 261 and then there is the 261CM . Difference is the CM has the electronically (M-tronic) engine control system where the plain 261 does not. The 261CM has no choke setting -just a start, run, and a momentary stop setting.

 

Does anyone else find cutting, splitting & stacking firewood therapeutic? I was at it all day and pissed ive gotta stop because its getting dark.

Yeah I think I'll be just fine with the 261, not sure whether I should spend the extra and get the CM or not.. But you're right about the 500i costing basically double if not over double..
And with what little I'll be using it, at this point doesn't make sense to spend the extra on the 500i (even tho it'd be "cool" and bigger).
Also surely that new price will drop down the road once they've been out a while, so I can get it then and have two sizes etc.

Any of you run the western style or westcoast handle/grip?

 

?????? Do you mean the full wrap handle vs. the non full (standard) handle?
Never heard the full wrap described as part of the country -it has to do with if you are very often cutting with the saw laid over sideways -it gives one a more positive grip on the saw when doing so.
On the Stihls, it is a option on many of the pro/upper level saws

 

What is the difference in the price between the two. I do know they had a few problems a couple years ago when the "M-tronic" first came
out, but since have the issues? worked out. This is what I have found from talking to 4 dealers and reading about them. If you are like me --a techy kind of a guy -- I would go for the CM. Mine has been flawless in 10 or so tank-fulls of gas

I've heard them called that, not really sure how it got started tho.

I'm really not sure about the price difference, I can't remember..
I may be going to pick up a saw tomorrow, so I'll find out... But it may be a bit different where you're at.

 

The "R" designation on the saw model number denotes the "full wrap" handle option as Stihl call it in their catalog

 

Figured I'd share a quick story, since it's chainsaw related and could be a valuable lesson.

A few years ago my uncle was talking with his good friend in his friends yard, his friend was about to start cutting a limb down from a tree.

My uncle walked back to his house real quick for a snack, when he returned shortly after to his friends place.

He found his friend laying under the tree dead, with the saw bar right down the middle of his forehead into his brain.

Apparently he had tried to cut the limb over his head and it kicked back.

Sheesh... what a story. Yes the more I work with the chainsaws the more cautious I am due to the fact that anything can happen that fast and it probably won’t be on a positive note if shit happens....

 

Yeah, not trying to be a buzz killer in here, but I want people to be safe, could save a life.... Ya never know.
