What Chainsaw do you run?

I use a full wrap on my falling saw (Stihl 046). On my climbing saw/s (Stihl 290 or Husky 51 or Stihl MS200) standard handles for me are preferred. The 200t is a top handle and quite frankly my go to now unless the tree is big and thick at the top. The full wrap is nice when notching and back cutting...but by no means a requirement for the work that I do/have done. More of a preference. I don’t like a full wrap in the trees because of the extra weight and the fact that it provides more things to get caught up in the limbs. It’s a pain in the #*% when you’re pulling a bigger saw up by a rope and it gets hung up...even more of a pain when it’s dangling from a tag line and keeps you from moving around.

 

This is always on my head. I like this climbing helmet versus the more traditional type. I have the tinted visor too. And wear clear safety glasses. Just use foam ear plugs for earpro. I feel like I have more mobility with the plugs.

 

You guys who mix there own fuel... what oil and spec you use.... I have just about finished the gallon of husky fuel I bought my saw with and was wondering what you guys run.... I’ll be sticking with 40:1-50-1 ratio and non ethanol fuel 89 octane. Although I did purchase another Gallon of the 95 octane husky fuel... found it on sale... I figured that will run into early next year and then see what happens

 

Use whatever 2 cycle mix I happen to buy and mix it 50:1 with premium gas

 

Those are nice...can’t count how many times I’ve knocked this off my head and had to have someone send it up to me...

 

I use royal purple mix in 93 oct Sunoco fuel in my MS271 Farm Boss when I have a bigger job. If I'm doing small occasional stuff I'll use a pre-mix because they are ethanol free.

 

50:1 for all my Stihl power equipment (chainsaws and leaf blowers). I use 91 octane non-ethanol fuel whenever possible and for storing. If I'm using them a lot and burning a lot of gas, I'll use 91 with ethanol. Use either the Stihl or Husky ultra oil.

I have to drive about an hour for the ethanol free gas.

 

Same. There are many tools I will drink a beer while using, chain saws are not one of them.

I've been dealing or trying to deal with Tinnitus for many years now..... Not fun.

 

I use 40-1 in everything. Some of my stuff calls for 40-1 some calls for 50-1, I haven’t had an issue in 5 years of running 40-1 in all of it. None of my stuff is super high end so I am willing to roll the dice on that. I use 2 cycle weekly in my lawn care. I use ethanol free 91 pump gas with whatever reasonable looking 2 cycle mix I see at the store. I’m on a bottle of poulan right now, I liked the little measuring compartment that was on the bottle.

 

I have always -(last 15-20 years or so) used the Stihl standard 32-1 mix :STIHL 2-Cycle Engine Oil and Lubricants | STIHL USA in all of my Stihl saws, blowers and weed eaters. I have NEVER had any engine problems with any of these. Now heres the shocker for all of the non believers: I mix it with with regular unleaded. No starting problems - no carb problems -no NOTHING. I just replaced my 15-18 Y/o 310 saw -running perfect. I wanted a lighter saw with a compression release. I thought about replacing my 20 Y/O 420C back pack blower, but my dealer said mine was just fine and the only thing I would gain is a few more MPH's. I also run a 20 Y/O Stihl "Pro-Series" (mod#?) string weed eater. All these Stihls have ran for 15-20 years on regular unleaded and the Sthil 32:1 oil. I see no reason to go to the exotic pre-mixes!

 

Same...too many concerts (I worked as stagehand in HS and college) and guns with no earpro. Mine isn't so bad that it prevents a good night sleep, but noticeable when it's quiet. I wear ear plugs using my drills, vacuuming, etc. And of course with guns, saws, etc.

 

Oh but that 95 octane!! Lol Iv fallen in love wit the smell! Like I could go fire up that saw in the garage and bath in that exhaust for a few minutes!!! ;-)

 

Mine has caused me to develop sound irritabilities.. One of the worst is clanging dishes.

 

I’m a West Coaster born and bred. Grew up with Grandfathers who logged giant coastal redwood in Northern Cal. And the huge old growth fir in Western Oregon. I never heard that term until recently. I think Stihl or someone connected to them marketed a “West Coast” model ms460. It had dogs, a full wrap handle, and a larger oil pump if I remember correctly.

That would've been an interesting life and time to do that. With all those big trees, I would've hated to take one down tho honestly, I guess if the forest is managed properly it wouldn't be as bad as completely leveling it.

Haven’t heard about that story...interesting.
My grandfather from Oregon was a Fellar who used springboards axes and whip saws. Later on he went went deaf running the old David Bradley chain saws. My California grandfather worked coastal redwoods near Scotia Calif. lost his eye in a hunting accident and had to leave the woods. Lot of history.

 

That's terrible. An undercut is always the last resort for me, and only if I can cut up against the handguard and lock my forward elbow out. I have also done a few plunge cuts in tree stumps. I hate those as well.
