It only happens when the brake is applied while turning right. I took the caliper & rotor off & checked to see if anything (rock, etc.) might be stuck. There were some small/tiny remnants of the dust plate I removed last winter, so took care of those, Pads seem ok. Put 'er back together & I think it's actually a little louder. Passes the wheel bearing tests. Brakes work fine....

Just because a wheel bearing passes the usual physical grab test does not mean that it's still not bad and not rearing it's ugly head when it is load bearing the trucks weight on the side affected by it.

    Some food for thought.

Sounds like the rusty dust shield may still be touching the rotor.

There's really nothing left to it. Plus, & this just occurred to me, if it was the dust shield, why would having the brakes applied matter? Wouldn't just turning be enough?

Only one side of brake caliper moves the pad, the other pad is stationary. Pad pushes caliper into shield causing scrapping sound when braking.

    K. I'll go back in & cut out whatever remnants are left of the shield. I didn't notice any scratches on the caliper, however I wasn't thinkin' like you're "sayin'"....

I also had this metallic sounding scrape, when turning to the right. Without really taking anything apart, because I just didnt feel like it, I pulled the dust shield towards center of vehicle and it went away.

Most likely the deal and easiest place to start.

There is really nothing but tiny remnants of the dust shield left. I got most of in out when I did the LBJ. You can barely tell there was one there.

So here are some pics. As you can see the dust shield is pretty much all removed. The rotor pics are outside & inside, respectively. & the top caliper bolt hole is worn. Any of this seem off? Or what may cause the scraping?

This didn't sound right. I mean it's right, just not for my truck since I have 4 piston calipers.

Update just in case anyone's interested. I went in & cleaned up any little pieces of teh dust shield & cleaned up the brakes, fresh lube, made sure the anti rattle clip wasn't strangling the pads.... Put 'er back together, went for a ride & the noise even happened without the brakes applied. So onward. I have found that the passenger side axle is problemed. Could this be causing driver side scraping? I dunno.... I started another post because I was wondering about the wheel bearing whilst swapping out the axle....
    Thank you....

    You are correct.

You can tell if the wheel bearing is bad by jacking the truck up, grabbing the tire at the top and bottom and wiggle it towards and away from you. If it moves alot your bearing is bad. It's one of those "you will know it when you feel it" type of things. I was going to say dust shield as the sound you described happenec to my avalon and the dust should rusted completely off and was just hanging there, but you already yanked it off.

Soooo.... I figured out what’s I believe was the problem.
First of all, those anti squeal clips hold the pads down to the point that they can barely move. I had bent up the sides a bit when installed.

So fast forward, present day -

After the scraping started with brake applied, I went in & cleaned them up & bent up the sides a pinch more. Well, then the scraping started up whenever I turned left, brake or not.
Meanwhile I had to swap out the right front axle. Whilst I was doing that I cleaned up the brakes as well & noticed rust buildup on the outer edges of the rotor. Lightbulb - I said to myself, I said “Self, what if there is rust buildup on the left rotor & it’s actually scraping on the clip? & possibly, when I bent the edges a pinch more it caused it to go from when I was just braking to whenever I turn?” Sure enough. & the rust was more prevalent on the inner edge of the rotor. Maybe that’s why it happened when I turned left? I dunno. Sanded it down & only took a little spin afterwards, however I typically hear it right off the bat!& it was all quiet. So there you have it. Hopefully case is solv-ed.

So I'm taking all that last post back. The scraping was still there. Turns out my rotor is messed up. On the outer face, one edge was way more worn than the other. The pads had looked decent enough from the front, however when I took everything apart, it was a different story. The pistons weren't frozen, so I am not sure what went down. I see now that I need to clean up the slides more often than never. That may have contributed. The other thing is I decided to install 2nd gen anti rattle clips. With the 1st gen ones everything slides all nice til I put them in.
So lesson here to be learned is eyeballing the parts is not good enough. The pads tell a story & if ya can't see them in their entirety, you may be missing it.

Good feedback. I think that’s what’s going on with one of mine. Getting some ugly sounds only when turning right. Def similar to how you describe it.

Oh, & luckily there's a lifetime warranty on everything. The guy at NAPA insists it was due to the caliper, so they're replacing that as well.

Nope. Still there. I found this wheel bearing vid. I also noticed the noise at 3:05 coming from the left hub. I thought maybe it was the axle cotter pin, but I made sure it didn't have any movement to it when I re-replaced the axle & the noise is still there.

Update - Scraping was gone after I did the bearing. As was the engine grumbling. & for what it's worth, I need an alignment. Occurred to me that's kind'a worth a lot to me, well, it all is, especially when I was not 100% sure the bearing was in dire need.
